Hi everyone, my name is Brittany Adebumola and I am currently a sophomore at Syracuse University where I am majoring in Acting and minoring in Psychology. I have been granted the opportunity to study abroad in London next fall (August 2018). This abroad program is unique because in addition to studying at the Shakespeare Globe Theater, I will have the opportunity to perform on its infamous stage. An experience many actors dream about. While abroad I will be taking 3 drama classes and a psychology course! I plan to take advantage of the nearby countries and inexpensive flights to travel throughout Europe on my days off. Fortunately, my grant covers my tuition but the program fee is my hurdle to jump. With your support, I will raise enough money to pay my program fee of $7,100 . The remaining funds will go towards transportation and meals.
When I was little, I had big dreams of being on Barney and Friends, being a star performer, and being a singing and dancing pediatrician. One of the unfortunate things about growing up is that we tend to dream less. With age, we become more aware of our circumstances and we tend to become more pessimistic, therefore; not allowing our imaginations to soar. Now, I am not old by any means! I've got a long ways to go. But the effects of growing up have already taken its toll. Growing up in a single-parent household, although my mom never burdened my siblings and I with money troubles, I was aware that we had to be frugal with money. As a result, I shut down potential opportunities, whether academic or extracurricular, if it would cost the slightest financial strain. And as we know, money is attached to so many experiences in our society.
Recently, I was devasted by the realization that I don't dream anymore. When I first heard about the London Abroad Program, I didn't even allow myself to consider it because I immediately saw it as a financial burden that I could not afford my mother. But a few weeks ago, I gave myself permission to imagine what it would be like to study in London, to recharge my creative juices in a totally new creative environment, to give myself the chance to have that experience. Allowing myself to dream soon led me to fill out London Abroad application, which then led me to ignore the ever-present voice in my head saying that this was a selfish, burdensome endeavor. Consequently, I was accepted into the program, all because I dared to dream again.
