Aiden, Our Precious Blessing

Donation protected
January 19 is a day my family has celebrated since 1982. On that day, God blessed us with my niece Nikki Ramirez and every year since then, we have celebrated her. This year began much the same as the years before. The family began sending birthday wishes through the many means of communication (FaceTime, text, phone calls, emails, etc.) and we once again felt blessed that God afforded us another opportunity to celebrate Nikki. At approximately, 8:00 am, we learned from Nikki that this birthday celebration may be a bit different.

You see, Nikki and Evan and big Brother Alexander, were expecting a child and he (Baby Aiden) decided he too was going to surprise Mom that day. As we began to receive notifications from Nikki, Baby Aiden had his own plans; we found ourselves overjoyed because we would not only continue to celebrate her every 19th of January, we would now celebrate him as well.

Beautiful Baby Aiden Tyler Pullano was delivered on Monday, January 19, 2015. He weighed 8lbs 3 oz, 20 inches long.

I'll continue with Baby Aiden's story sharing as much information as possible without violating or disrespecting Nikki and Evan's privacy.  During delivery Baby Aiden suffered complications that caused his heartbeat to drop significantly and in turn led to an emergency delivery. After delivery, the doctors reported to the parents that it took approximately 20 minutes to restore his heartbeat. He has been in critical condition since delivery and every moment is crucial as we pray to God to grant us a miracle for Baby Aiden to make a full recovery. He has suffered trauma to his brain, has a ventilator to assist him with breathing, is on several medications to control seizures, blood pressure, and to assist his organs in the development process.

Saturday, January 24, 2015, Nikki and Evan learned from the doctors that he needed additional special care that would afford him the best chance to recover. To best support him, the family was notified he would have to be transferred to VCU Medical Hospital as they did not have the technology to perform the procedure at the hospital he was born in. Baby Aiden was transferred that evening and is now in the Intensive Care Unit, VCU Medical Hospital, Richmond, VA. Along with the complications I have already shared, Baby Aiden is not receiving the oxygen he needs for his heart and lungs to perform as they should.  The procedure is called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); or extracorporeal life support (ECLS); an extracorporeal technique providing both cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and lungs are so severely diseased or damaged that they can no longer serve their function. Initial cannulation of a patient receiving ECMO is performed by a surgeon or anesthetist and maintenance of the patient is the responsibility of the perfusionist or ECMO specialist who gives 24/7 monitoring care for the duration of the ECMO treatment.

My family is a family of faith! We have and will continue to be united as one as we recognize that we will only be defeated if we give up! We are thankful and grateful that God blessed us with Baby Aiden. He, even in his fragile state has taught us so much already. God continues to answer the prayers from our family and friends as we appreciate every second Baby Aiden is with us. He continues to give us the strength we need so that we continue to support Nikki, Evan, and Alexander during this trying time.

I'd like to share one of many prayers we have received for Baby Aiden:

"Our heavenly father, we thank you for this day. Today like every day before we are placing our concerns and petitions at your feet. We give them to you God because we understand that you are big enough to handle anything. As Nikki shared the news of Aiden opening his eyes for her, my heart is filled with emotion. Because just as Aiden knows his mommy's voice and a mother knows her baby's cry... I'm believing that you know and hear the voices of your children who are crying out for a miracle. We thank you Lord for every small step in the right direction, for every small victory because every small success is leading to something bigger and greater. Thank you once again for the people you have placed in Aiden's path, every doctor, every nurse, every family member, for every person that is bombarding heaven with their prayers both near and far. Thank you God for every great thing that you will do today...thank you for Aiden...we love you for it. In Jesus' name...Amen!" (Erica Hayes-Cousin).

We ask as you read Baby Aiden's story, you find it in your heart of hearts to pledge to his cause in an effort to assist the Pullano family defray some of the costs associated with the extended stay in the hospital. I also ask that you would bless him with a prayer. The Almighty God has chosen a path for Baby Aiden; we may not understand but we will accept as we are most grateful that he is here with us today!

Thank you from the family of Aiden Pullano
