Baby Zaya's New Heart

This is the story of Zaya Rose Biel. My good friends, Justin and Rose Biel’s, first child. Zaya is a beautiful little girl who desperately needs your love and support. She has come here to teach us all about acceptance and unconditional love, but first we have to get this little girl healthy.
Justin and Rose Biel gave birth to their first child, Zaya Rose, on January 1, 2019 at 5:21AM at Heart of the Rockies Medical Center in Salida, CO. A few hours after a beautiful natural birth, Zaya’s oxygen level dropped and she was rushed on Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital Denver.
They sat in the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for days waiting on results. When they got them, their lives changed for the second time that week.
The doctors told them two facts about their daughter that knocked the wind right out of them:
Zaya has a chromosomal abnormality called Trisomy 21, which is commonly known as Downs Syndrome.
Zaya has a congenital heart defect called AV Canal Defect. This means she has a large hole in the center of her heart in place and cannot regulate the flow of blood and oxygen in her body.
Zaya is going to need heart surgery before she’s six months old.
After a lot of tears wondering what they could have done differently, what this means for their baby girl and countless questions about what to do next, they resolved to simply love their daughter and started fighting to get her healthy.
The past months have been an all-encompassing journey as they try to understand her condition and make the best decisions to help their little girl. Currently, Zaya is undergoing an intensive treatment plan that includes acupressure, infant chiropractic, naturopath medicine, energy healing, occupational therapy, speech therapy and lactation, in an effort to give her the best shot at a high-functioning life. Little Zaya has also been on oxygen since birth to balance her heart condition.
On May 20th, after a long battle with insurance to find Zaya the best doctor, the family is headed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for her open-heart surgery.
This has been a whirlwind for Mom and Dad, but little Zaya has passed gracefully through her daily struggles, teaching us all more about love, compassion and strength with every passing hour. We are so grateful to have her in our lives and feel confident that her surgery is going to be a success.
Justin and Rose have done their best to get Zaya’s treatments, medical needs and surgery covered, but a lot of the proactive steps they are taking to help her live a high functioning life are simply not covered by traditional insurance.
