Two-year-old Tinken needs urgent surgery in the U.S. for congenital dysplasia in both hips. If untreated, this Kenyan child will suffer from premature arthritis, severe leg length discrepancies, and trouble walking as she grows and matures.
Normally, a ball at the end of the large leg bone fits into a cup-like bone in the hip socket. In Tinken’s case, these two bones are disconnected. With an abnormal gait, she sways from side to side with poor balance and difficulty walking. Correcting this condition will require extensive treatment if Tinken is to have a chance at a normal life.
My name is Sarah Hadden. I’ve known Tinken's mother, Caroline Senteu, since my first trip to Kenya in 2010. Since then, we’ve become close and caring friends. Caroline’s life has been difficult, and she’s had to fight for every impressive goal she’s achieved. With true grit and against all odds, Caroline received an education in her remote village and ultimately became a nurse. Now, with the help of a generous sponsor in the U.S., Caroline is midway through her first year of medical school at the University of Nairobi, one of the few Maasai women ever to be admitted. Her goal is return as a doctor to rural and remote areas of Kenya where there is no medical help.
Caroline wants the same bright future for her daughter that she’s striving to create for herself and her family. She knows that without the surgical treatment Tinken so badly needs, her daughter’s future is dim. Doctors in Massachusetts are interested in treating Tinken (based on her X-rays and medical reports) but first must see her for a pre-surgical evaluation. This should take place in January when Caroline is mid-semester, free to travel abroad without missing medical school classes. Surgery will likely take place in late spring.
The cost of airfare Nairobi/Boston is prohibitive unless caring donors pitch in. Please help this deserving family provide their beloved only child with an opportunity for a healthy, normal life. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
