Baby Joel was born by emergency cesarean birth on November 14, 2017 ... a month early. He was found to have Hydrops Fetalis and Chylothorax causing heart failure, extremely sick kidneys, and fluid around the lungs which restricted his breathing. Chest tubes and breathing tubes were inserted into his body just minutes after being born.
His mother (my daughter) didn't see him for the first time until 7 hours after birth. When she finally was able to view him, he was in a closed incubator and covered in tubes & wires. She could only see her first born baby for about 10 minutes before he was taken away. He was then immediately flown from Maui to Oahu and placed in the Neonatal ICU with round-the-clock nursing care.
As soon as she was released from the hospital after her c-section surgery (2 days later), she flew to Oahu that night and has not left his side ever since. He is now 2.5 months (as of the end of January) and has never been out of his hospital rooms.
Breast milk was finally able to be given to him by swabbing onto his lips via a Q-tip when he was 11 days old. It was 16 days before he could be held for the first time, and wasn’t able to breathe on his own until 1.5 months.
After combating all of the above issues, right as Kapiolani Hospital is ready to release him home to Maui, he then gets diagnosed with an extremely rare condition in his brain known as AVF (Arteriovenous Fistula). He is being medivac’d on January 24 for highly specialized and life-saving emergency surgery in San Francisco. This surgery has never been performed on an infant as young as him.
