Help Jillian Kick Cancer to the Curb Again!

Welcome to Team Jillian!

This is Jillian's story as told by her parents Brandon and Erin:

On March 5, 2020 Jillian went in for a CT scan after demonstrating signs of discomfort in her bottom area (i.e. not wanting to sit in highchair, car seat) for a couple of months.  Our pediatrician worked hard to problem solve to no avail.  Suddenly, Jillian’s ability to walk normally was impacted which yielded the CT scan.  The scan showed a massive tumor in her pelvis.  It had spread to her lungs.  Stage 4 malignant germ cell tumor.  Our oncologist quickly prescribed 4 rounds of chemo to shrink the tumor in hopes of removing the remainder surgically.  Jillian completed the prescribed treatment by June 10th.  The surgeon felt confident that he removed all of the remaining tumor/cancerous cells.  We felt confident that she was cancer-free once and for all.

Fast forward to August 17th when we went in for our 2-month follow-up visit and labs.  At that appointment, we found out that her AFP (tumor marker) had risen from 14 to 62 (25 and below is considered normal) raising concerns that there was a tumor growing somewhere in her body.  We waited another 2 weeks to see if the marker would go back down, but in that time it increased from 62 to 190.  A CT scan revealed a small (cm in diameter) spot near her rectum.  The surgeon has elected to go in and get it out.  4 rounds of a different chemo protocol will follow surgery.

Our family has been hit hard financially during this time.  Although all of our medical bills are covered by Children with Special Healthcare Needs, Erin has had to take unpaid leave for both the first treatment protocol and the relapse protocol.  Not to mention, she had just returned from maternity leave with our baby boy 2 weeks prior to Jillian’s original diagnosis.  We are so thankful to our team who has gotten us through this difficult time.  Your donations help us make up for Erin’s lost income and help cover the cost for our out-of-pocket health benefits during this time of unpaid leave.
