Baby Cosma

This is my sweet Niece Cosma who is about to have open heart surgery next week. Her parents are both so strong and amazing and I know that all their friends, family, and community want to help support them and do whatever to help Cosma thrive to her highest potential. Please read this letter from my brother and sister in law and if you can or want to donate I would be forever grateful.

Hi friends,

Thank you all for all your prayers and well wishes!  We are so blessed to be a part of such a strong and loving community.  We have already received so much humbling support from all of you since we’ve become a family, that we’ve been hesitant to request support once again.  Many of you have offered your meals and even homes during Cosma’s surgery.  While we greatly appreciate these offers, we have arranged lodging at the hospital and we’ll have family around feeding us throughout the week. In lieu of meals we invite you to make  a small donation here to help us with medical costs.

As many of you know, our sweet baby Cosma is about to have open-heart surgery to repair her congenital Atrial and Ventricular Septal Defect.  She was diagnosed in early July after her pediatrician heard a murmur, then promptly referred us to a cardiologist.  We learned that Cosma has two holes in her little heart, one small hole in her atrial septum and a large hole in her ventricular septum, causing lots of stress on her heart and lungs.  Our Cosma needs to work extra hard to breathe, and especially eat, limiting her weight gain and overall growth.  After our first meeting with the cardiologist we were told that her condition was going to be monitored monthly and that surgery was a possibility for the future.  At our next visit, we learned that Baby’s condition became serious as her growth plateaued and her weight dropped to the 1 percentile. We were then advised to schedule the surgery.

Cosma’s surgery is thankfully a common heart surgery with low risks. It will completely fix our baby’s heart and eliminate all of the symptoms of the defect. We’re so grateful for modern medicine and baby’s care team, and we are lucky to have health insurance to help with this procedure.

Unfortunately, even with insurance, our expenses continue to add up. We’ve been stretching a single salary over the past few months of my maternity leave.  I recently returned to work full-time in September, but now I’ll be taking time off again to care for Baby post-surgery.  It has been a costly health care year with my complicated labor and Cosma’s reflux issues and VSD diagnosis.  Consequently, we’ve reached our deductible and are close to reaching our out of pocket max.  We’re only $3,800 away from our out of pocket max, which is our goal for this fundraiser.  After that, our insurance will cover 100% of our health care for the remainder of the year, yoohoo!

Thank-you again for all your love.  Baby Coco has no idea how incredible her community is.  I can’t wait to tell her all about you!

All our love,

Blanca, Cody, and Baby Cosma
