The Baby Bobby Bookmobile was born from the desire to honor the memory of Baby Bobby McVerry, son of teachers, Ms. Serna and Mr. McVerry. In the fall of 2014, at 7 months old, Baby Bobby passed due to a very rare genetic condition.
Baby Bobby’s parents read to him every moment they could and still do – because to read is to love! The Baby Bobby Bookmobile wants to share the same love with Austin students!
Last summer, with the help of a partnership grant from Scholastic and author James Patterson, we gave away hundreds of books over 4 weekends to students of Govalle Elementary. This summer, we hope to expand to neighborhoods with students that attend Govalle, Ortega, Oak Springs, and Becker Elementary.
We plan on ordering great books from Scholastic, again, but Bob is also adamant on scouring used book stores (his favorite) to find hardback library-bound books.
Our long-term plan is to work on how to sustain this project financially, but until then, no donation amount is too small!
