Baby Aelin Needs a Liver

At just five months old, baby Aelin is in need of a liver transplant. This past February, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia , a rare liver disease that affects the bile ducts. Bile cannot flow from the liver as it should, which quickly leads to liver damage and cirrhosis. Aelin underwent an intense 8 hour surgery on March 3rd at Buffalo's Oishei Children's Hospital called the Kasai procedure to re-route her small intestine to her liver. Initially, it appeared the surgery was a success and Aelin seemed to be doing better for about a month but then her health quickly took a turn. The surgery failed to be enough to fix her bile flow and Aelin's liver is failing.
On April 4th, Aelin was transferred via ambulance from Buffalo's Oishei to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where her parents learned she needs a liver transplant. UPMC is world-renowned for pediatric transplant success and is where the surgery will take place upon finding a liver donor match for Aelin. After a week of monitoring and tests, Aelin was sent home with her parents who are taking care of her special needs.
While Aelin waits for her liver donor match, we are raising funds in preparation to help pay for her medical bills, medications, travel costs and housing for her parents to stay with her in Pittsburgh for her post-transplant recovery. We also need help raising funds for Aelin's liver donor. We recently spread the word that we are searching for an adult donor to give Aelin 25% of their liver. Although we are still waiting for confirmation of a match, we want to be prepared to cover costs for her donor's medical bills, recovery and travel to/from Pittsburgh for all post-transplant check-ups. All donations will go directly into a bank account Aelin's parents set up specifically to cover the cost for Aelin's transplant surgery.
