Babies Raising Babies

Four years ago, I met a young girl who changed my life forever. Next week is her birthday (and my husband's birthday!). I met Esmeralda at an orphanage I was volunteering at. Her son was 8 months old the first time I saw him. She was only allowed two diapers per day for Jimmy, they didn't have any hot water, rarely had two full meals per day, and weren't allowed to leave the filthy orphanage. Even though she was only 14 years old, and didn't choose to be a mom (her step father raped her after her mother died), she adored her son and would do anything for him . Since meeting Esmeralda and Jimmy, we have helped 12 young moms move into a home where they can live without fear of abuse, go to school, get quality medical care, and feel safe and loved. We have a new mom-to-be who is 11 years old. Next week we will be going to Peru to see first hand what the girls and babies need most to not just survive, but to give them hope and a hand up, not just a hand out. We have set a goal to raise $10,000, that's just under $500 per child to provide not just for their basic needs, but to help them follow a path that will allow them to care for their babies long term.
