Supporting Amelia's Graduate Studies at Harvard

Dear Friends,

I am thrilled to share news that I am beginning graduate school at Harvard University to study international education policy. This study interest stems from my desire to advance access to high quality education to girls in vulnerable contexts around the world. In November I moderated a panel on the topic at the UN and look forward to other opportunities to raise awareness and resources to support girls in need globally.  

As a first-generation college and graduate student, this opportunity is exciting for many reasons. You may not know that my background makes me an unlikely candidate for this opportunity. I was placed in foster care at two months of age and adopted by a woman who did not complete elementary school. My adopted mom, Eula Mae, was born in 1926 to a sharecropping family in North Carolina  and left school during her elementary years to contribute to the family income. Years later she became a house cleaner in NYC and at some point, a foster parent.

I share these details to make clear how unlikely of a journey this has been. Although she has passed away, I know I am attending Harvard because of her sacrifices.

I am writing to ask you to consider contributing to my tuition. I am raising $20K and applying for scholarships for an additional $27K (and counting) to offset loans.

I would be grateful for any amount you may consider donating. No amount is too small.
