Anyone who knows me knows my godson Xavier. For 6 years I have raised someone else’s child. I have played the role of mommy; when he was hungry, I fed him. When he got out of line, I disciplined him. When he was in need of love, I overloaded him with it. I’ve been way more than just a godmother to Xavier. He has been the light of my life since the day he was born. He is a fun, loving, handsome, athletic, down and dirty 6 year old boy who loves to put a smile on everyone’s face. He is currently inroled in summer camp, karate and starts first grade in august.

I was awarded temporary custody of Xavier in August of 2012. His mom was in rehab for heroin and pill addiction while his dad was in jail for possession charges. I’ve raised him solely with absolutely no help from either parent for the past two years. They have never called for a birthday, to check on school, or just to say hi. They have never asked if he needed or even wanted anything. In February, I had to go file for legal guardianship so I could change his doctors. After filing, both parents objected. This was the first time we have ever heard from either parent. We went to court and they were granted visitation, but neither parent has made the visits consistently or on time for that matter. They don’t pay their child support which in turn reflects their concern for his well-being.

Xavier’s biological father served 3 years in jail from when Xavier was 6 months old until he was 3. He has been in and out of jail ever since. He currently has pending drug charges and is looking at serving serious jail time again. He has never been a reliable factor in his life, a provider, or a good role model for an impressionable young man. He has another son that he does not have custody of and one on the way, due any day now. Xavier’s mother has a mirrored lifestyle. She is currently in jail serving 9 months for drug and theft charges. She also has 2 other children, besides Xavier, that she does not have custody of, and is currently pregnant with her 4th child while imprisoned.

While both of X’s parents have had attorney’s appointed to them, I have not been so lucky. I have been put in the situation of having to put forth my own money to compensate for lawyer fees. I am fighting for what I truly believe in, and that is making sure Xavier remains with me, where I not only can continue to love, support, and raise him, but where my entire family can do the same. The only way this can be done is if I continue to fight through these cases.

For those of you who know, I am currently raising a newborn baby. Times are tough and I am asking; with every ounce of my pride aside, for any donation to help with these lawyer fees. I ask you to take just one minute to imagine something you care about deeply being torn away from you. What length would you go to fight to keep it? I’m fighting for Xavier to have the chance to live a normal worry free life that he deserves. Please help me, us, and most of all, him.
