I am emotionally moved by this story. Stephen and Sandra have been married for twenty-five years and have been inseparable, two in one. I met them over a decade ago, and I always felt, they had a special kind of love. They truly are of one mind, body and soul.
In January 2013, at age 54, Stephen was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. This news came as a shock to all of us. Stephen underwent Chemotherapy and Radiation treaments for six months. The prayers, love, and support they received from friends and loved ones during that very difficult time was both overwhelming and empowering. Sandra was always by his side, and never gave in to her own emotions. Stephen was slowly making progress, and had a 90% prognosis cure rate. Things were looking great for almost one year, but this all changed very quickly.
Stephen is a loving, humble, charming, old soul of a gentleman. He is the kind of man that embraces everything with kindness and touches your heart with his spirit the moment you meet him. His devotion to his wife is immeasurable.
At the one year mark, they were informed, that the cancer had not only returned but that it had spread. His only hope was a new clinical trial that he underwent over the past two months, which was not successful. In fact, the cancer has spread even more. All hope is lost, as they now face this terminal cancer.
Stephen has been working throughout his illness. This will change in the next few weeks as he and Sandra will be spending their time together, along with their dogs, whom they call "our kids".
