Medical Expenses

Brenda Ann was born on October 24, 1992. She was immediately baptized and transferred to the children's hospital. Before she was 24 hours old she had surgery to remove 2/3 of her intestines as they were malrotated. She spent 6 weeks in the neonatal unit before she could finally come home. At 9 months she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that primarily affects the pulmonary and digestive systems. Because of the CF she is fat-soluble vitamin deficient, has cirrhosis of the liver, osteoporosis, and arthritis.

She was admitted to the hospital on June 27 and into the ICU on June 30. She stayed in the ICU until July 3. She is still in the hospital. She isn't out of the hospital and bills are already coming in.

In her lifetime she has endured over 10 surgeries, hundreds of medical procedures, and an average of 3 - 4 hospitalizations a year. The hospitalizations increase with frequency each year.

She is on a 4,000 calorie a day diet. On an average day she takes 60 pills a day, 2 -nebulized medicines twice a day, and 2 inhalers twice a day.

Although she has insurance the recent changes in the healthcare have caused our out of pocket expenses to skyrocket. Insurarance covers most of the prescribed medicine, but the copayment on most is $40. There seems to be copayment for everything. Insurance does not cover nutritional supplements, fat soluble vitamins (ADEK), digestive aids (Miralax, Culturelle, etc.) and any other over the counter things she needs.
