Apartment for Dad

To say that my dad has had an interesting year is an understatement! After fulfilling his life dream of retiring to New Orleans last August, he suffered a severely debilitating stroke in October. He was only in his dream apartment there for 6 weeks before it happened and it was horrible. After months of rehab at Tulane, my brother and I reluctantly moved him back to Birmingham for further rehab closer to family. Now with nearly a year of recovery and very hard work, my dad can walk with a cane and has regained most of the use of his left arm. Watching his long recovery has been extremely difficult but rewarding for this "daddy's girl"!
Finances haven't been easy for my dad though and after much discussion we have decided that it makes good sense for him to move in with my kids and me. He's determined to maintain his independence but paying for his own place leaves nothing left for basic necessities and certainly not enough for him to visit his other grandkids or friends in New Orleans. Living with us just makes good sense!
In order for him to live here though, we need to build a bathroom and bedroom in the basement. Currently at my house you have to climb 2 sets of stairs to the bathroom - which he can do now! - But it’s definitely not something we want him doing all of the time. A basement apartment would create a permanent living situation for my dad and help him maintain some sense of privacy and independence.
This is where you come in! Estimates put the build-out at about $10,000 - certainly more than this single mom has lying around. I've never done anything like this before but I know there are so many people in this world that LOVE my dad! I thought maybe some of you would be willing to pitch in and help us create his own space. We would both be so thankful for any amount received!
