Help Civil Rights Activist Singer Cleo Kennedy

Donation protected
Civil Rights Activist and gospel singer Cleo Kennedy of Birmingham, Alabama, had a house fire recently. She is unable to live in her home at present and while she is working part-time, she needs help to cover some of the most basic costs.

When I heard Ms. Kennedy's story, my heart broke.  I knew I needed to do something to help her.

Ms. Kennedy sang with Carlton Reese's Birmingham Freedom Choir during the  1963 Birmingham Campaign and later sang with fellow civil rights activist Dorothy Love Coates and the Gospel Harmonettes. She sang solos at meetings featuring the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and went to jail (twice) as part of the Birmingham Campaign. She  spent years singing with the Reverend James Cleveland and has performed with some of the biggest pop talents of the 20th century.

Ms. Cleo Kennedy has done so much for gospel music and for freedom in this country.  It's time for us to thank her for her efforts by showing our love and gratitude in her time of need.  Whatever you can give to help Ms. Kennedy during this time will help her  immensely  and your kindness will be of immeasurable comfort to her.

Here she is, singing  "Freedom Medley," arranged by Emmanuel Reese, at  Tabernacle Baptist Church  in Selma, Alabama, February 2018.
