Fight Back Against Parkinson’s!

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects movement. Research shows that forced, intense exercise, such as boxing, can slow the progression of PD.

For nearly 4 years, our coaches, Angel McNamara and Makeda Richardson have worked together to help in the fight against PD by teaching the Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) Method to our community of fighters at Rock Steady Boxing Montgomery County (RSB MoCo). The RSB Method enables individuals diagnosed with PD (RSB MoCo fighters) to fight back against PD through participation in a non-contact, boxing inspired fitness program that strives to improve their agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork, and overall strength. RSB MoCo aims to improve the quality of life for fighters diagnosed with PD, while work is being done to find a cure!

Several times a week, approximately 30+ fighters arrive at RSB MoCo in Gaithersburg, Maryland accompanied by volunteers and their caregivers a.k.a RSB MoCo CUT (Caregivers You Trust) Squad to actively fight back against PD with warm hugs, well-orchestrated exercise circuits, and a non-boxing training regimen created only for a TRUE fighter.  As the gloves are put on, the notion of having a chronic disease is shed. The non-contact training is executed with spirit and tough love. RSB MoCo is so much more than training for a fight, it is about going toe-to-toe with PD, and we’re in it to win it!

Angel and Makeda, bring unbridled enthusiasm and extraordinary talent to the boxing community and have made a powerful difference in our lives. They are intentional about exploring new approaches to combat the disease.  Specialty classes have been added to address nutrition, alternative medical approaches and the benefits of neurological activities.

With years of experience and proven success in building community and bringing boxing fitness to senior and individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Angel and Makeda are well qualified and eager to establish a boxing inspired space to better support and serve their fighters.

The RSB MoCo CUT Squad hopes to raise $50,000 through this campaign to: 1) Help our coaches acquire and establish their own boxing inspired fitness facility. The facility will provide boxing-inspired training programs and classes for individuals diagnosed with PD. 2) Purchase an automated defibrillator, and much needed fitness and boxing equipment. This equipment will be used to train, strengthen and protect our fighters. 3) Professional development support and hiring of a new coach/trainer. Our coaches will participate in courses to earn and maintain their professional credentials and hire an individual with expertise in neurological physical therapy to assist with the movement needs of the fighter community. 4) Have the RSB MoCo CUT Squad members certified in First Aid and CPR CUT Squad members that receive this training will have the knowledge and skills to assist their fighters and our community in case of an emergency.

We thank you in advance for your much-needed support!
