Study Abroad in Dominican Republic

Hi everyone! My name is Alexis Sanders. I am a first-year Psychology major, Spanish minor from Homewood, Illinois. I currently attend Hampton University. In my first year of college, I made the Dean's list, became a residence hall volunteer, joined the Majestic Dance Troupe, Psychology Club, and Feminaire (an organization devoted to scholarships and internships for women).
Since the start of the semester, I've been looking for study abroad programs that would work best for me. In the process, I was fortunate enough to find a Summer Language and Culture program in the Dominican Republic offered by the Council on International Educational Exchange. In the D.R, I will take a 3 credit course in Spanish an elective related to Hispanic Carribean Culture & Society or Cinema for session 2. Classes are held at the Pontificia a Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and the Dominican American Cultural Center in Santiago.
In the meantime, we get to explore Santiago de Los Caballeros and Santo Domingo from the shores to the tours. We live in a homestay, to practice Spanish daily and learn cultural customs. We are provided every meal through our homestay.
The CIEE program offered a $500 Minority Serving Institution Grant; I already put $300 down myself-for the confirmation fee towards the program. I also received a grant to pay for airfare. Moreover, I'm in the process of searching for possible scholarships. Currently, I am only signed up for session two; however, I can apply for session one if I exceed the Go FundMe goal.
Tuition cost approximately $2,833 per session. Housing is $500 for 8 weeks, and Insurance is $167. Transporation is $75. Supplies and registration will cost $150. In total, the program is $3,930 not including airfare, supplies, registration, and transportation
I intend to complete my goal by June 3, 2018, with your help!
My overall goal, especially as a Spanish minor, is advancing towards fluency and knowledge of Latin culture. Through this trip, I want to gain knowledge of Dominican culture and the dialect of Spanish that is spoken there. I also want to know more about the society when it comes to the socioeconomic disparities, colorism, and their perception pertaining to those issues. Through cultural food, my classes, and family life, I can work towards the goals I have and have an amazing experience. Later, I hope can make an impact on it with connecting psychology.
