Give Taiko a Home

Donation protected
[*Disclaimer: We have toured several monasteries and parishes in the DC area looking for a place where Taiko could stay. Sadly, a cheap hotel was our last option. This was by not means our first alternative. Of course, if you know of a safe place that's cheaper please let us know. We'll keep on looking.]

Hi!

We are Amada, Leith, and Carlos. Together we have been taking care of Taiko Goto for a while now. She's a very kind Japanesse lady. Some of you might have seen her around CUA where she volunteers at the Ceramics Studio in Salve Regina Hall. She's 83 years old and dedicates her days to feeding the stray cats, dogs, and birds of DC. She also volunteers at the Library of Congress and loves reading books.

Until recently she lived in an apartment in Brookland for which she paid $900.00 per month. The rent increased dramatically to $1,800.00, which she could not afford. She held on for a while, but on July 1st she was evicted. She also lost all her furniture when it was sent to the dumpster the next day.
After she was evicted she spent four nights sleeping in an alley behind her old building, where she endured the pouring rain and was robbed by a man who took what few valuables she had left. When we found out about her situation we decided to help her. She's safe at a cheap hotel, for now.

Victory Forest, an apartment complex for low-income seniors in Silver Spring, MD, has kindly agreed to consider her and put her at the top of their waiting list. But that can take a couple of weeks.
We're doing our best to help her, but we need your help to keep her off the streets while she awaits for an apartment to vacate at VF. We need money to pay for her hotel room for a few weeks, and to replace her furniture.

There are several ways you can help:
1) Make a donation here.
2) If you have extra furniture and household goods to spare, please let us know. She needs everything!
3) Stop by the Potbelly on 655 Michigan Avenue NE and buy her soup. Just order it and mention that it's for Taiko Goto and they'll give it to her when she comes.
4) Volunteer to move her things into the new apartment when the time comes.
5) Volunteer your car to transport donations into the new apartment.
6) Do you have an extra room in your basement that she could use for a few days?
7) Pray for her!
