Medical Campaign in Guatemala

Donation protected
Long before attending medical school I had a goal of traveling to third world countries so that I can offer my help in any and all ways. As time has progressed that goal has become aimed at offering my help through medicine, and as I near the end of my second semester of medical school I have the opportunity to do just that.

My medical school career began just eight months ago and I have already gathered an immense amount of knowledge about the well being of the human population across the world. The most surprising fact is that in these underserved areas the most needed medical intervention is education. I have since joined an organization on campus called LMSA (Latin American Medical Association) and the chance to educate some underserved areas has fallen into my lap.

I hope to embark on a trip to Guatemala this fall break and along side 10-12 fellow classmates participate in a medical campaign. This campaign will include traveling to various community groups, schools, orphanages and childcare centers to educate the people on some simple yet very important hygiene and healthcare practices. We believe knowledge is not only one of the most valuable tools of all, but also the longest lived. Nonetheless education is not enough in some of these areas and thus during these visits we will be carrying out physical exams, check ups, and offering vitamins/supplies. We plan to leave the 21st of August and return the 31st before school starts again, giving us ten days to spread as much knowledge as possible.

This campaign requires us to compile medical equipment, supplies, and the biggest burden of all: travel. Thus I am asking my friends and family to help fund this opportunity of mine. The total cost of the trip is $1,600 and the breakdown is as follows:

Flight: $640
IVHQ registration: $250
IVHQ Program Fee: $450
(IVHQ is the third party organization helping us to set up travel within the country, meeting with community groups, room & board, and food)
Medical Supplies: $60
Health Insurance: $50
Vaccinations: $50
Various fees for taxes, GoFundMe cost, and non-medical supplies: $100

Total: $1,600

Last, I have my personal hobby of creating videos of all my trips and it is my goal to send each of you helping me on this journey a video documentary of my travels to this beautiful country. A few weeks into September look for those in the mail, BUT do not forget to send me a mailing address!!!
