Azule BIPOC Residency

We will be embarking on a residency, traveling from New Orleans to the mountains of North Carolina where we will retreat in the creative haven known as Azule. Azule  is a rural retreat center dedicated to serving artists across disciplines and backgrounds. As artists we will have the opportunity to explore our craft in a beautiful, rural setting, as well as time to bond and deepen connections with each other.

Considering the global moment, we hope the retreat will bring both deep rest and creativity to the collective. The artists come from a wide array of disciplines. Our artistic mediums include dance/movement, spoken word, media art, painting, drawing, theater and many others with no names.

Your Funds Will Support These Artists:

INDEE MITCHELL
KAYE
NATHALIE NIA FAULK
NYX ZIERHUT
RHIA JADE
RYUTA IWASHITA
ZENSUKE OMI

What The Funds Will Be Used For:

The funds will be used to pay the room and board fees at Azule. The funds will also be used for food and gas for the residents to travel to and from Azule. A small stipend will be given to all the residents should we raise funds beyond our goal. While the residents will not have to pay for their time, we do believe it is important they are paid for their work.

Why Your Support Matters:

We are seeing this residency as a significant social movement since many artist-in-residencies in the United States do not center BIPOC artists. This will be a great role model for other BIPOC artists to feel empowered to get what they need with help from people with resources.

Your contribution will help the residents rest and create in a way that they have always wanted to since the beginning of the pandemic. With your help, we will feel grateful to know that retreats and/or residencies are made not just for people with career and money but for marginalized artists who weren’t given many opportunities to pause and feel our innate power.

Why A BIPOC-ONLY Residency?

A few white folks in our dance community in New Orleans started discussing creating a residency this summer where they would be able to dance and create safely. As they discussed the possibilities they realized that in this time of national social upheaval and revolt against white supremacy, it was essential for them to center BIPOC in this residency. They realized that to fail to include and center BIPOC would be another step down the road of white supremacy. Once they had realized this much, the BIPOC artists who have been part of the community made it clear that what they wanted was a space to meet and dance together without white folks. Upon hearing this, it was immediately obvious that an all BIPOC residency was the right course and the thing to do now was to get behind the idea and figure out how they could support it. This GoFundme campaign is a result of their efforts to support the BIPOC dance and performance community of New Orleans.
