Help Chelsea stay at Wheaton College!

Hello! My name is Chelsea Garcia and I am an upcoming sophomore at Wheaton College. I am studying neuroscience and chemistry and following the pre-medical track. After my first year, I have learned an outstanding amount about myself and have worked really hard to achieve my goals. As a freshman I maintained a 3.9 average while working for the Wheaton Lacrosse teams and being a member of three clubs on campus. This summer I was selected for three jobs/internship opportunities and decided on the Summer Undergraduate Mentorship Program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I have been following my dreams to become a doctor as I have been working five days a week doing research and shadowing an amazing OB/GYN doctor.

This year has definetly been a crazy rollercoaster for me, but when I look back I remember every day I spent laughing and enjoying my time at Wheaton. I also remember all the long nights in the library, all the early morning classes taking Organic Chem and all the time I put into reaching out to professors, advisors, and tutors. I have learned to be comfortable and in love with the setting that Wheaton has to offer for me. However as happy as I am with the school, I am dissapointed to say that they have cut my financial award in HALF for this upcoming 2014-2015 year.

As a Latina from the Bronx, I completely understand what its like to have the financial barrier keeping you one step away from your dreams. However, I refuse to let that be my story because my education is something that is worth investing in to make sure I succeed in my future. Although I am sharing my story in hope for some financial help, I will never forget to give back once I make it into the medical field and I'm able to live a stable life. I plan to study pediatrics or neurosurgery and give back by working as doctor in underrepresented communities like my own. My parents continue to support my dreams and I thank them for providing for me through everything I have done so far. I want to thank them for every sacrifice, every 4 hour car ride, every kiss, every hug, and every piece of advice they have ever had to offer. Their words of wisdom, along with so many people I have encountered continue to keep me positive in times like these where it may seem easier to just give up.

Since I am not giving up, I plan to work as hard as I can to get enough money for one more year at Wheaton. So far I have gone about my situation by contacting the student financial services at Wheaton, sending an appeal letter, and speaking with counselors, workers of the Fullbright scholarship, and other support systems that have been able to give me advice. I currently will be paying $32,700 to attend this upcoming year and this is double from my freshman year. Many will ask how come these changes are so drastic? Well according to my FAFSA, it states that my income has increased, however, it does not state the story behind it. In 2010 my father was injured and had to have surgery. Fortunately, he was able to go back to work in 2013 and begin to pay back all of the debt, medical bills, and personal bills that my family has accumulated. With about $15,000 in loans that I will have to take out I am hoping to raise enough money for my unsubsidized loan. I appreciate all the help that you can give and want to thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I promise to never give up, and work to the best of my ability to make you proud!

Thank you,
Chelsea Rae Garcia
