<div>Hello, my name is Alejandra Gómez García, and I’m creating this campaign to support my nephew, Matías Gómez Rivera, a 13-year-old boy who has spent his entire life facing one of the most devastating medical conditions known: Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare, severe, and incurable form of epilepsy.

<div>Since his first week of life, Matías has suffered daily seizures. In 13 years, we have never known a single seizure-free day. Over time, his health has been affected by multiple complex diagnoses:

<li>Epilepsy and epileptic syndromes with complex partial seizures

<li>Severe physical, mental, and cognitive developmental delay
</li>
<li>Lack of head control (he cannot hold his head up)
</li>
<li>He cannot speak, see, walk, or control his bladder or bowels
</li>
<li>He urinates through a vesicostomy (a surgically created opening directly to the bladder)
</li>
<li>He has undergone multiple eye and kidney surgeries
</li>
<li>He lives with only 49% of brain activity, and that remaining portion suffers from constant neurological short-circuiting, triggering relentless seizures.

<div>Seven years ago, Matías went into status epilepticus—a life-threatening seizure episode that required intubation and left him in a coma for 10 days. Since then, his condition has worsened, and his care has become even more demanding.

<div>Matías is a 100% dependent child, requiring 24/7 care. He is lovingly and attentively cared for by his parents. However, due to the extreme complexity of his condition, only one parent can work, while the other stays by his side full-time.

<div>Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome is considered a high-cost illness by the public healthcare system in Colombia, but this hasn’t prevented serious financial limitations. The national health insurance (EPS) has stopped supplying essential medications and diapers, forcing the family to shoulder the full financial burden.

<div>A single income is no longer enough to cover everything Matías needs: uncovered medications, co-pays, transportation, specialized food, hygiene supplies, rent, and utilities.

<div>What’s most concerning now is the emotional and physical toll. A year and a half ago, Matías’ mother was diagnosed with caregiver burnout syndrome, and despite her condition, she had no choice but to keep going. This week, his father also received the same diagnosis. This is a serious warning sign—if both parents collapse under the weight of this responsibility, Matías’ well-being is at real risk.

<div>Hola, mi nombre es Alejandra Gómez García y estoy creando esta campaña para ayudar a mi sobrino Matías Gómez Rivera, un niño de 13 años que ha vivido toda su vida enfrentando una condición médica devastadora: el síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut, una forma rara y severa de epilepsia que no tiene cura.

<div>Desde su primera semana de vida, Matías convulsiona todos los días. En 13 años, nunca hemos conocido un solo día sin crisis epilépticas. A lo largo de este tiempo, su salud se ha visto comprometida por múltiples diagnósticos:

<li>Epilepsia y síndromes epilépticos con crisis parciales complejas

<li>Retraso severo en su desarrollo físico, mental y cognitivo
</li>
<li>Falta de control cefálico (no puede sostener su cabeza)
</li>
<li>No habla, no ve, no camina, y no tiene control de esfínteres
</li>
<li>Vesicostomía (orina a través de un orificio quirúrgico directo a la vejiga)
</li>
<li>Ha sido sometido a múltiples cirugías oculares y renales
</li>
<li>Vive con solo el 49% de su actividad cerebral funcional, y ese porcentaje sufre cortocircuitos neuronales constantes, lo que genera sus convulsiones diarias.

<div>Hace 7 años, Matías vivió uno de sus momentos más críticos: un estado epiléptico tan grave que tuvo que ser intubado y permaneció en coma durante 10 días. Desde entonces, su situación se ha vuelto aún más delicada y su cuidado, más exigente.

<div>Matías es un niño que requiere cuidado total las 24 horas del día. Es un niño muy bien cuidado, con amor y dedicación por parte de sus padres. Sin embargo, debido a la complejidad del cuidado, solo uno de ellos puede trabajar, mientras el otro permanece a su lado en todo momento. Esta situación, sumada a que el síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut está catalogado por el sistema de salud como una enfermedad de alto costo, ha generado muchísimas limitaciones económicas para su bienestar.

<div>La EPS (seguro de salud en Colombia) ya no está entregando los medicamentos principales ni los pañales, lo que ha hecho que la situación se vuelva insostenible. Un solo ingreso no alcanza para cubrir lo que requiere: medicamentos no entregados, copagos, alimentación especializada, pasajes, servicios, y demás necesidades básicas.

<div>Pero lo más difícil ha sido el desgaste psicológico y físico. Hace un año y medio, la madre de Matías fue diagnosticada con síndrome del quemado (burnout). No tuvo otra opción que seguir adelante. Esta semana, su padre también fue diagnosticado con la misma condición, lo que representa una seria señal de advertencia: si ambos cuidadores colapsan, el bienestar de Matías también corre riesgo.
