<div><strong>La historia de Alejandra</strong>
</div>
<div>Mi esposa, Alejandra, tiene 39 años y desde hace unos meses enfrenta una de las batallas más duras y extrañas que pueden tocarle a una persona joven y sana. Fue diagnosticada con un <strong><em>tumor sólido pseudopapilar del páncreas</em></strong>, un tipo de tumor extremadamente raro que representa apenas entre el <em>0.2 %</em> y <em>2.7 %</em> de los tumores pancreáticos, y que afecta casi exclusivamente a mujeres jóvenes.

<div>Lo que hace aún más complicada su situación es que este tumor, aunque en muchos casos se detecta de forma contenida, en el caso de Alejandra presentó <em>metástasis</em> hacia otras zonas, como el <em>colon, hígado</em> y el <em>peritoneo</em>. De los pocos casos que existen, <strong>sólo entre el <em>10 % </em>y <em>15 %</em> evolucionan así</strong>. Además, este tipo de tumor no responde a quimioterapia tradicional, por lo que el tratamiento es quirúrgico y es costoso.

<div><strong>¿Qué ha pasado hasta ahora?</strong>
</div>
<div>Alejandra fue sometida a una cirugía mayor donde se le retiraron cuerpo y cola del páncreas para intentar salvar la función pancreática pero se tuvo que remover el bazo, la vesícula, omento, implantes en el peritomeo y se hizo una resección del colon. La cirugía duró aproximadamente 7 horas y no se pudo completar la remoción total del tumor que se había extendido hacia el hígado debido a la pérdida de sangre y consecuente pérdida de presión aterial por lo que se suspendió para evitar complicaciones. La recuperación fue larga y difícil, con drenajes constantes, transfusiones, pérdida de peso y muchas limitaciones. Pensábamos que lo más complejo había pasado… pero no fue así.

<div>Meses después de su alta, empezó a presentar fiebre, fatiga, pérdida de apetito y dolor abdominal. Acudimos a urgencias, y tras nuevos estudios, detectaron una colección de líquido en el abdomen relacionada con una fístula en el colon, posiblemente relacionada al procedimiento en ésta área. Tuvieron que realizarle una punción, colocar un nuevo drenaje y mantenerla hospitalizada nuevamente. Los estudios mostraron una zona grande llena de líquido que al extraer se catalogó como mayoritariamente infeccioso y se procedió a hacer cultivos para saber qué antibiótico sería el adecuado.

<div><strong>¿Por qué necesitamos ayuda?</strong>
</div>
<div>Aunque contábamos con un seguro de gastos médicos, la suma asegurada se <em>agotó</em> durante la primera cirugía. Parte de los gastos médicos ya fueron cubiertos con apoyo familiar y deudas que seguimos pagando, pero hoy ya no tenemos cómo cubrir lo que viene.

<div> <strong>Alejandra’s Story</strong>
</div>
<div>My wife, Alejandra, is 39 years old and for the past few months, she has been facing one of the most difficult and unusual battles someone young and previously healthy could experience. She was diagnosed with a <strong><em>solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas</em></strong>, an extremely rare type of tumor that represents only <em>0.2%</em> to <em>2.7%</em> of all pancreatic tumors, and that almost exclusively affects young women.

<div>What makes her case even more complex is that, although this tumor is often found in a contained state, in Alejandra's case, it had already <em>metastasized</em> to other areas, including the <em>colon, liver,</em> and <em>peritoneum</em>. Of the few known cases, <strong>only 10% to 15% progress this way</strong>. Additionally, this type of tumor does not respond to traditional chemotherapy, so the only treatment option is surgical—and expensive.

<div><strong>What has happened so far?</strong>
</div>
<div>Alejandra underwent major surgery where the body and tail of her pancreas were removed in an attempt to preserve pancreatic function. However, they also had to remove her spleen, gallbladder, omentum, peritoneal implants, and a portion of her colon. The surgery lasted nearly 7 hours but couldn’t be completed due to significant blood loss and a critical drop in blood pressure. The team had to stop the procedure to avoid further complications.

<div>Her recovery was long and difficult—drainage tubes, transfusions, extreme weight loss, and many physical limitations. We thought the worst was behind us… but that wasn’t the case.

<div>Months after being discharged, Alejandra began experiencing fevers, fatigue, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. We went to the ER, and after a series of studies, doctors found a fluid collection in her abdomen, likely due to a colon fistula related to the previous surgery. She had to undergo a drainage procedure, received a new drainage tube, and was hospitalized again.

<div>Lab results showed a large infected area, and cultures were taken to determine the correct antibiotic treatment.

</div>
<div><strong>Why do we need help?</strong>
</div>
<div>Even though we had private medical insurance, the maximum coverage was <em>completely used up</em> during the first surgery. Some of the medical costs were covered through family support and personal debt, but now we are out of resources to face what’s coming next.
