<div><strong>UPDATE: Due to inconsistencies in the doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan, I decided to put the procedure on hold and seek a second opinion. As a result, my current specialist told me that cross-linking would not be a viable option because 1) it would cause further damage to my corneas, and 2) keratoconus tends to stabilize around age 35. Therefore, the new option is to use a pair of specialized lenses called scleral lenses, which will support my corneas and correct my vision. Fortunately, the cost is lower, although I still need financial support. The price is $20,000 MXN. So far, I have $4,000. I’m sharing the new diagnosis along with the quote I received.</strong>

<div>At the end of 2014, I was diagnosed with <em>keratoconus</em>, a disease that progressively deforms the cornea, making it thinner and worsening vision without the possibility of full correction. The disease was already in an advanced stage due to a misdiagnosis by a doctor several years ago, although it was not critical. Because of this, I underwent a procedure called <em>crosslinking</em> just one week later. This procedure involves applying a vitamin to the corneas and then exposing them to ultraviolet light to stop the disease. The procedure was successful. In 2015, a year later, I was finally discharged.

<div>However, during a routine checkup at the end of 2023, my doctor noticed significant changes in my <em>corneal topography</em>, or the study of the cornea's shape and thickness. He prescribed eye drops for me to use for a few months. Later, in 2024, I had a final checkup during which he discharged me. However, he told me to use artificial tears for life and prescribed <em>rigid gas-permeable contact lenses</em> to help my cornea maintain its shape. He warned me that the keratoconus could become active again and told me to come back this year for an evaluation.

<div>Unfortunately, during this year's consultation, he noticed changes in my cornea again. He said it would be best to undergo the procedure again because everything indicates that the disease is still progressing, albeit slowly. He advised me to do so as soon as possible to prevent further damage to my corneas. He gave me a new prescription in case I wanted to change my glasses, but he did not recommend it since those values could change quickly.

<div>Unfortunately, I don’t have enough money. I was laid off from my job as a supervisor in September 2024, and since then I haven’t been able to find a job that pays a decent wage. I earn just $1,800 MXN a week, plus bonuses and grocery vouchers, and it’s contract work, so that amount can go down if the contract is short. Between paying for utilities, food, clothes, and my son’s needs—like diapers, formula, and pediatric visits—I have practically nothing left to save. My family has been incredibly supportive, but they have their own expenses too.

<div>That is why I am asking for your support to undergo this procedure as soon as possible. The clinic told me the cost is around 27,000 MXN, including the procedure for both eyes and the doctor's fees. Therefore, I rounded the amount up to 30,000 MXN (1,664 USD) to have extra for consultations and medication.

Debido a esto, fue necesario que apenas una semana después me sometiera a un procedimiento llamado crosslinking: la aplicación de una vitamina en las córneas y su posterior exposición a luz ultravioleta para fortalecer las córneas y detener la enfermedad, intervención que resultó ser exitosa. Un año después, en 2015, se me dio de alta definitivamente.

<div>No obstante, durante una revisión de rutina a fines del año 2023, el doctor notó cambios importantes en la topografía corneal (estudio de la forma y grosor de la córnea), por lo cual me puso bajo tratamiento con gotas oftalmológicas durante algunos meses. Posteriormente, en 2024, tuve una revisión final en la cual me dio de alta, aunque me mandó continuar con las lágrimas artificiales de por vida y me recetó lentes de contacto rígidas permeables al gas para que ayudarán a mi córnea a mantener su forma, bajo la advertencia de que el queratocono podría activarse nuevamente, y me dijo que volviera este año para evaluarme.

<div>Lamentablemente, durante la consulta de este año, volvió a notar cambios en la córnea y me dijo que lo mejor sería someterme al procedimiento nuevamente ya que todo indica que la enfermedad sigue avanzando, si bien lo hace lentamente, me indicó que lo haga a la brevedad para prevenir un mayor daño a mis córneas. Me recetó una nueva graduación por si era de mi interés cambiar mis gafas, pero no lo recomienda ya que esos valores podrían durar muy poco.

<div>Por desgracia no cuento con los fondos suficientes. Fui recortado de mi trabajo como supervisor en septiembre del 2024 y desde entonces no he podido conseguir un salario digno.
