Mi nombre es Orestes Manzanilla y mi papá, quien vive en Venezuela, fue diagnosticado recientemente con un cáncer escamoso catalogado como Cáncer del trígono retromolar (ST I T1NOMO). En un intento por extirpar el tumor maligno, fue sometido a una cirugía que le afectó el carrillo y parte de la mandíbula. Este tumor ha traído otras complicaciones, entre ellas una afectación del sistema circulatorio que ha ameritado ya la amputación de todos los dedos de sus pies, y la pérdida de falanges en dos de sus dedos. A pesar de estos invasivos procedimientos, su situación continúa siendo de alto riesgo.
Mi papá está soportando esta extremadamente difícil situación de salud en medio de la actual crisis que hay en Venezuela, en un contexto de escasez de alimentos, medicinas y servicios básicos, y una economía hiper-inflacionaria. En los hospitales y clínicas en Venezuela, se le requiere a los pacientes traer sus propios insumos, como por ejemplo inyectadoras, antibióticos y vías intravenosas, debido a que escasean y son difíciles de encontrar. Los pacientes que tienen la suerte de llevar sus propios insumos y conseguir una cama de hospitalización, son presa a menudo de robos dentro del hospital, por parte de aquellos encargados de cuidarles (personal del hospital). El caos económico en Venezuela ha agravado la situación de mi papá, pero él la enfrenta con gran valentía, perseverancia y un inquebrantable sentido del humor
Estamos batallando para garantizarle los tratamientos necesarios, así como para hacer todo lo posible para aliviar el dolor físico y emocional que esto conlleva. Sin embargo, difícilmente nos damos abasto para cubrir los costos de sus tratamientos y cirugías. Las medicinas e insumos médicos a menudo deben ser adquiridos en el exterior a costos muy elevados. Adicionalmente, la inflación en Venezuela está se proyecta alcanzará 1.000.000 %.
Es por esta razón que hoy acudimos a su generosidad y apoyo. Su colaboración nos ayudará a tratar los efectos residuales y colaterales de su cáncer. Cualquier monto que esté en su posibilidad donar nos será de muchísima ayuda, ya que cada granito de arena cuenta. Si no le es posible donar, simplemente compartir ésta información también nos ayudará grandemente.
Una vez estabilizada la crisis circulatoria, nos será posible comenzar el tratamiento oncológico con radioterapia que tanto necesita. Estos tratamientos tienen un costo estimado de aproximadamente US$3000. Esperamos que mi padre pueda mejorar su actual condición y así continuar bendiciéndonos con la calidez de su afecto, su sonrisa, y su sabio ejemplo.
Si me lo permiten, me gustaría compatir acá un poco sobre la vida y trayectoria de mi papá, y explicar por qué tantos lo admiramos y apreciamos tanto:
Debido a su sensibilidad e interés en la construcción de una mejor sociedad mi papá, ha estado permanentemente reflexionando sobre cómo podemos organizar la vida en común en la sociedad. Por ello, formó parte de un equipo que diseñó e implantó un modelo de desarrollo social autogestionado en más de 40 comunidades en Venezuela, en colaboración con las universidades de Carabobo y Zulia.
Ha dejado por escrito sus reflexiones y aprendizajes en varios libros en las áreas de educación, gerencia, participación ciudadana, educación para la paz, así como también en uno que escribió recientemente proponiendo ideas de cómo podemos hacer, de manera más sistemática, que nuestros niños crezcan convirtiéndose en buenos ciudadanos.
Mi papá con mucho esfuerzo logró graduarse de Ingeniería Eléctrica, posteriormente hizo su Maestría en la misma área y otra en Desarrollo Social y a sus 60 años decidió hacer un Doctorado en Educación que culminó con éxito a sus 63 años. Llegó a ocupar posiciones de gerencia y coordinación en empresas e instituciones que en su momento han sido importantes en la historia de nuestro País, como la Universidad Simón Bolívar, la Universidad Central de Venezuela, el INCE, LAGOVEN, el Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela, la Fiscalía General de la República, y el anteriormente denominado IUPFFAN.
Con un nuevo libro en proceso, Gonzalo tiene aún mucho conocimiento que compartir con el mundo y no tiene ninguna intención de bajar el ritmo. Su generosa contribución nos ayudará a asegurar que él pueda continuar haciendo lo que ama, rodeado de quienes lo amamos. Espero mucho que pueda retomar su pluma, y seguir compartiendo con nosotros lo que genuinamente, desde su alma, quiere que no se quede en el tintero de su mente.
UPDATE: Debido a que el monto real del costo de la radio-terapia es mucho mayor al estimado por la oncóloga, el monto total requerido para completar los tratamientos es de US$ 5.312. Se pagó la primera parte del tratamiento, del monto ya recaudado, y estará iniciando la radio-terapia el próximo 24 de Septiembre!

My name is Orestes Manzanilla, and my father Gonzalo, who lives in Venezuela, was recently diagnosed with cancer retromolar trigone (RMT) squamous cell carcinoma. In an effort to extract the malignant tumor, he underwent surgery to remove part of his cheek and jawbone. This cancer has brought other complications, including a compromised circulatory system which has already resulted in the amputation of all his toes and the loss of phalanges in two fingers. Despite these drastic procedures, he continues to be at serious risk.
My dad is enduring this extraordinarily tough health problem amid the current humanitarian crisis in Venezuela of hyperinflation and scarcityof food, medicine and essential services. In many cases, hospital patients are required to bring their own basic supplies, such as IV drip bags, anti-biotics, and syringes, since they are in short supply and difficult to obtain. Patients who are lucky enough to find their own supplies and get a hospital bed often find their belongings stolen from their room by those charged with their care—hospital employees. Venezuela’s economic turmoil has compounded the severity of my dad’s situation, but he is facing it with great courage, perseverance and an unwavering sense of humor.
We are struggling to guarantee the necessary treatments, as well as to do all within our means to alleviate the intense physical and emotional pain that his situation entails. However, we are barely able to cope with the expense of his treatments and surgeries.Medical supplies and medications must often be purchased abroad at very high prices. On top of all this, Venezuela’s inflation rate is predicted to hit 1,000,000%.
That’s why we’re turning to your generosity and support. Your collaboration will allow us to treat the residual side effects from his cancer. Any amount you’re able to donate would be appreciated; every little bit helps. If you’re unable to donate, simply spreading the word and sharing this campaign with others will be a huge help.

Due to his social sensitivity and interest in building a better society, Gonzalo has constantly reflected on how we can live together in society. Motivated by this, he joined a team that was responsible for the design and implementation of a self-governed social development model in more than 40 communities in Venezuela, in collaboration with the universities of Carabobo and Zulia.
Through several books he’s written in the fields of education, management, citizen participation and education for peace, my dad has shared his reflections and life lessons. In one recent book that he wrote, he proposed ideas on how we can raise our children to be good citizens.
My father obtained a hard-won engineering degree, followed by a M.Sc. in the same area and another one in the field of social development. Then, at the age of 60 years old, he decided to undertake a doctorate degree in education, which he successfully finished in three years. He went on to hold management and coordination positions at companies and institutions that have been important in the history of our country, such as Simón Bolívar University, the Central University of Venezuela, the INCE, LAGOVEN, Engineers Guild of Venezuela,Public Ministry, and the IUPFFAN.
With another book in the works, Gonzalo still has plenty of knowledge to share with the world and has no intention of slowing down. Your generous contribution will help us ensure he’s able to continue doing what he loves, surrounded by those who love him. I really hope he can pick up again his quill, and continue sharing with us the ideas living in his mind and his soul, so they are not left out in the ink bottle of his mind.
UPDATE: Because the real cost of the radio-therapy is actually a lot larger than the estimate made by the oncologist, the total amount required to complete the treatments is of US$ 5.312. A first quota has been paid from the money already raised, and he will be beginning the radio-therapy on next 24 September!
