¡Hola familia! Me llamo Enrique, soy Ingeniero agrónomo y he estado dos semanas en Mfangano Island (Kenia). Fui allí a casa de una familia local con el objetivo de ayudarles tanto a ellos como a su comunidad no solo en el campo sino también en los muchos otros proyectos que están desarrollando. Y es que Samuel, el padre de familia, es un hombre totalmente volcado en su comunidad y que, gracias a la aportación de los voluntarios, está pudiendo llevar a cabo cosas tan importantes como construir un hospital, construir un depósito de agua, conseguir material escolar o repartir filtros para potabilizar el agua de cientos de familias, entre otros muchos proyectos.

Ubicación

La isla de Mfangano se encuentra dentro del lago Victoria en las aguas fronterizas de Kenia, Uganda y Tanzania. La población de la isla aumentó de alrededor de 16.000 personas en 1999 a alrededor de 37.000 personas en la actualidad. La isla tiene una superficie de 65 km² y se eleva a 1.694 m en el monte Kwitutu. Debido a su ubicación remota, es aún más difícil proporcionar infraestructura básica para la educación y la atención médica.

Por otro lado, en esta isla hay una tasa de incidencia del VIH de más del 30%, esto es hasta 4 veces más que en el resto del país, siendo Kenia uno de los países del mundo con más muertes por sida. Debido al gran estigma que rodea la enfermedad, y el limitado acceso a asistencia médica o métodos de prevención, sumado al "sexo comercial" que rodea las costas pesqueras a lo largo del lago Victoria, la infección por el virus se ha visto aumentada exponencialmente durante años. Una de las consecuencias directas de esto ha sido la gran cantidad de niños huérfanos.

Acerca del proyecto

Durante mi estancia, Samuel me llevó un día al colegio en el que él es el director. Debo decir que no creo que vaya a olvidar jamás el recibimiento que tuve por parte de los alumnos, los cuales habían visto muy pocos occidentales en su vida, y que me recibieron con grandes sonrisas, gritos y finalmente abrazos. Mientras me enseñaba el colegio, me llamaron mucho la atención dos aulas construidas a base de chapa y sin pavimentar. Samuel me comentó que cuando llovía ese suelo se convertía en un barrizal y provocaba problemas con ciertos parásitos. La verdad es que me dejó muy triste pensar que durante los 40 años que tenía el colegio no hubieran podido recaudar los fondos necesarios para poder construir esas dos aulas.

Pero no fue hasta un par de días más tarde cuando, hablando con Samuel, me comentó que se necesitaba poco dinero para construir cada clase. Hasta entonces, no sé porqué, pero no se me había ocurrido poder ser yo el que intentara conseguir ese dinero. Pero me pareció fácilmente alcanzable si contaba con la ayuda de familiares y amigos que se me encendió la bombilla. "Te voy a ayudar a conseguir ese dinero Samuel", le dije. Os podéis imaginar la felicidad con la que recibió la noticia no solo Samuel, sino también los padres del colegio...

De modo que todo el dinero que se recaude con esta iniciativa se utilizará para pavimentar, levantar muros y techo e incluso pintar las paredes (ya que lo hacemos, lo hacemos bien) de las dos clases.

Hi everyone! My name is Enrique, I am an agricultural engineer and I have spent two weeks in Mfangano Island (Kenya). I went there to the home of a local family with the aim of helping both them and their community not only in the countryside but also in the many other projects they are developing. And it is that Samuel, the father of the family, is a man totally overturned in his community and, thanks to the contribution of the volunteers, he is being able to carry out such important things as building a hospital, building a water tank, getting material school or distribute filters to make the water of hundreds of families drinkable, among many other projects.

Location

Mfangano Island is located within Lake Victoria in the border waters of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The island's population increased from around 16,000 people in 1999 to around 37,000 people today. About the project

During my stay, Samuel took me one day to the school where he is the principal. I must say that I am sure that I will never forget the reception I had from the students who received me with big smiles, shouts and finally hugs. While he was showing me the school, two classrooms built from sheet metal and without paving caught my attention. Samuel told me that when it rained, that ground became a quagmire and caused problems with certain parasites. The truth is that he left me very sad to think that during the 40 years that the school had been, they haven't been able to raise the necessary funds to be able to build those two classrooms.

But it wasn't until a couple of days later that, talking to Samuel, he told me that little money was needed to build each class. Until then, I don't know why, but it hadn't occurred to me that I might be the one trying to get that money. But it seemed easily achievable if I had the help of family and friends that the light bulb went on. "I'm going to help you get that money Samuel," I told him. You can imagine the happiness with which not only Samuel received the news, but also the parents of the school ...

So all the money raised by this initiative will be used to pave, build walls and ceiling and even paint the walls (since we do it, we do it well) of both classes.
