Axels hand surgery fundraiser

Axel was born with radial club hand, an extremely rare birth defect affecting 1 in 75,000 births.  We chose to deliver at Childrens in Minneapolis knowing there may be other issues that would be found at birth. It's a good thing we did because Axel has 8 specialists that follow him. We knew before we even left the hospital that Axel would need multiple surgeries. Most visible his hand. We saw a local specialist, who was great. She suggested he have a surgery called centralization.  The surgery would involve a pin being inserted thru his wrist and into his ulna. The pin would stay in a minimum of 6 months, and give him no range of motion. There also was a high rate of regression. We thought this was the only option and weren't to sure what to do. I happened to find a group on Facebook with families in the same situation. They recommended another surgery called ulnarization, which has a 100% success rate, very few complications and no regression.  The only problem is that there are 2 doctors in the world who perform this surgery. One in Florida and one in Maryland.  We chose the doctor in Maryland. We went for a consult in March this year. And decided to move forward with the surgery when Axel was just 14 months old. This gives him the best recovery doing it so young. So we are raising funds to help with the costs of getting to Baltimore for the surgery and placement of the fixator, which was a 10 day stay in Maryland. He keeps the fixator on for 3 months, then we have to go back to have the fixator removed along with a reconstruction of his thumb and placement of pins in his thumb. Then he will wear a cast for 6 weeks. And we then have to go back again to have his cast and pins removed. And any further surgeries will be assessed at that time.
