Aloha e, my Uncle Maury was diagnosed with Leptospirosis on August 18, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center, Hawaii.
After 5 days at home in severe pain he collapsed when he lost the use of his legs. He is still in critical condition in the ICU with platelet counts around 20 (they should be near 150). He is in acute renal failure with rhabdo myelitis, a life-threatening syndrome resulting from the breakdown of skeletal muscle fibers with leakage of muscle contents into the circulation. He is very, very weak but the nurses say he is slowly improving, so please continue to pray for him.
Please understand, my Uncle would never ask for this for himself. He never wishes to burden ANYONE with his problems. I ask this because Uncle Maury has always been there for my family, my brother's family and my father. He flew over many times to help before and after my father's two strokes. And, again, several times when my mother passed away April 23, 2021. Even when Uncle Maury comes just to visit, he fixes things at all our homes, does major yard work/landscaping and entertains and babysits the keiki, we never ask. He is the rock for his family, as well as the families of his children and extended 'ohana.
His out-of-pocket co-pays, his visit to the trauma unit and medications he will need to take will eat his entire savings. About to retire, Uncle Maury has worked for RCUH/NASA as a maintenance technician at the telescopes on Mauna Kea for decades. My Aunty is an elementary teacher and they live very modest lives. He is a humble man with lots of love for his family and community. He has done so much for so many, this medical emergency could be devastating.
We sincerely and humbly appreciate anything you are able to give. Mahalo for your kokua!
