lights for dark places

My name is Robert M Pugh......In January 2014, I was training for the 15k Gate River Run to be held in March, in Jacksonville Fla...it will be my 18th year participating. (I think my children are proud of me for running each year). I went to my Dr for the basic physical exam and all was well...except, he noticed that my white blood cells had been slowly decreasing in numbers over the past two years and even thought they were well within the "normal range", he ordered additional test.  As I arrived at the medical building he reffered me to, I read the name on the building, Cone Health Cancer Center Medical Oncology.
My mouth asked the question as tears attempted to form in my eyes "Oh Lord, what am I doing here?"  It would be a full two weeks before I shared that answer with anyone. It was Multiple Myloma, it is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow. It is a cancer of the plasma cells, which are part of the bodies immune system. My life perspectives have changed from that day forward, but there has never been fear, only faith. I listened, I read, I learned and I followed instructions. I immediately began chemo treatment, and after a very difficult beginning, my body has tolerated the continuous stream of chemicals designed to destroy cancer cells. In a few weeks I will have a stem cell transplant, that type of transplant will keep me under close supervision of the Dr for over 90 days. It is a facinating occurance (medically speaking). I have been surrounded by kindness, compassion and professionalism in both the Greensboro Cancer Center and  at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte. The kindness and committment of spirit given by the healthcare professionals has been such a joy to experience.  Good people doing tremendous things that touch the human spirit and soul. I am grateful but more than that...I am encouraged by their examples. This fund raising allows me to approach the next phase of treatment with a spirit of strength and focus, by addressing my medical expenses and living expenses during this time and removing the stresses associated with uncertainty in these areas.  There are wonderful lessons that will grow from this journey that I must teach!  My family and friends are aware of how I live my life...I love giving, protecting and encouraging others. I love people and I love each of you. It is my highest aim to continue to "Let my light shine".   I thank you in advance for your kindness, understanding, your expressed love and your support, there is not a gift too large or too small.... I can not afford to entertain the limitations of my comfort zone right now.  May you be blessed in the goodness that is yours.  I welcome your comments and/or questions.
