Avrel’s Stroke Recovery

On the afternoon of Friday, January 19th, our good friend Avrel Seale suffered a serious hemorrhagic stroke while at work. He was rushed to the hospital and had to have emergency brain surgery to deal with bleeding in the brain. After several days in the ICU, he has now moved to a in-patient rehabilitation hospital. While he has made serious strides since that scary day, he has not regained use of the right side of his body and is, for now, in a wheel chair. Thankfully, his cognitive abilities, speech and sense of humor were spared, and, as you might expect, his attitude remains positive.

Ave and Kirstin are now turning their attention to the reality of their financial situation, and acknowledging the fact that during the long road toward Ave's recovery, they will face some real financial challenges. They have deductibles and other uninsured medical bills to cover as well as the costs of making adjustments to the house (railings, grab bars, bathroom renovations, ramps, etc.) so that it will be ready for Ave when he gets home. They may also be faced with installing adaptive technologies into Avrel's truck or possibly getting a different vehicle for him. Kirstin has had to significantly cut back on her work schedule and they are not sure yet when Avrel will get back to his job at UT. There are also expenses for household bills, activities for their three boys, etc. on noticeably reduced income.

The Seales have been managing fine so far, but the journey they are facing is long and unknown. They are extremely grateful to everyone who has offered support in this last couple of weeks.
