Avoid the waste of African film talent!

Spende geschützt
Pierre Lankissa and other young, talented filmmakers from low-income countries need help to take part in film festivals.
Pierra Lankissa is a young talented filmmaker from northern Cameroon. He is among dozens of African filmmakers and visual anthroplogists trained by the master of visual anthropology programme of UiT The Arctic University of Norway (https://uit.no/utdanning/program/269222/visual_anthropology_-_master)  since the late 1990s. Lankissa was trained as part of Viscam (https://site.uit.no/viscam/), a five-year programme facilitating such training by providing grants and student exchange. Viscam and other programmes have been very successful in that they have fostered both excellent filmmakers from countries such as Cameroon and Mali but also flourishing academics, who after obtaining PhDs at home or abroad, are continuing their work to produce not only valuable research in countries where the facilities and conditions are not optimal but also to teach and educate new generations of students, such as that of Pierre Lankissa, to excel either in filmmaking or academia, or the fruitful combination of both. One of the major uphill struggles is how to present and promote all that talent, and distribute the wonderful films emerging from it in countries that do no have funding opportunities for this.

The Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) organises its annual international ethnographic film festival, the oldest in Europe, in cooperation with institutions in different countries. The 2021 edition is being held in Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.nafa2020.com).  One of the selected films is 'Scrap is our future', a film about teenage garbage collectors in Ngaoundéré, a city in northern Cameroon. This film tells an intimate story of Dembélé, an orphan, who since the death of his mother has become responsible for his own life. It is made by the young and talented Cameroonian filmmaker and anthropologist, Pierre Lankissa.

Lankissa and many other other filmmakers in low-income countries have no access to funding enabling him to travel and take part in film festivals, unlike many of his peers in European countries. Please help him travel to Lisbon to present his wonderful film by giving a small, or large, donation.

Budget for Lankissa's participation in the 40th NAFA festival:

Domestic travel in Cameroon to Yaounde or Douala:              EUR     400

Return international flight, Cameroon to Lisbon:                      EUR   1360

Accommodation in Lisbon, 6 nights @ 100 EUR:                        EUR     600

Food allowance (while travelling and in Lisbon, 8 days):       EUR     640

                                                  Total goal:                                                       EUR   3000
Risks and challenges
Due to the pandemic the festival may be postponed but in that case the money generated will be used later for the same purpose and/or used to fund the participation in NAFA festivals of other filmmakers unable to access funding in their own countries. Further, we may through this effort generate more funding than what is needed for Lankissa's travel and participation and, again, any surplus will be used for identical purposes.
