In the United States, we are currently experiencing what some are calling a “biracial baby boom.” The population of mixed-race Americans is growing at a rate three times faster than the population as a whole. Researchers say this puts multiracial Americans at the cutting edge of a cultural change. At the same time, not since the civil rights movement, has race been such a focal point within American culture and politics. The increased diversity of the American landscape is still seen as a threat to those who would remain divided. What does this mean for families who are a living, breathing embodiment of diversity?
As the mother of two biracial black and white daughters, filmmaker Lara Firestone is collecting the stories of mixed families in America, speaking to mothers and fathers who imagine a more diverse, less divided world for their children. Lara’s film will take an intimate look at the unique experiences of these families. In their own words, parents of mixed-race kids will illustrate the unique personal and societal challenges and rewards they face in the broader pursuit of any parent to raise children who are accepted and celebrated for being who they are.
This film will give an authentic human voice to the parents of children who can’t be defined by one race, one history, or one box on a form and who are doing so within the complicated crossfires of a heated political and social climate. How might these families inform and challenge how we perceive and define race, as they remind us that even the most complex lineage leads to a single, human story? It is through these stories of love, belonging, and connectedness that this film hopes to shine light on the fundamental, physical reality that we are more the same than different, more related than divided.
