7/10 - yesterday was a blur. Everything happened around me while I stood motionless. Avery is my world, my one and only. To watch helplessly as the doctors and nurses poke and prod is something I would never wish on my worst enemy. I knew Avery wasn't feeling well and refused to wait another day. I took her to a walk in clinic where they confirmed all my fears - Avery's platelets and hemoglobin were low. I knew with her excessive bruising and paleness and swollen lymph nodes it Could Be leukemia... But it's never going to happen to your child, right? You're child won't have cancer. You've seen the ads and you've done some research... but it's impossible. It absolutely isn't cancer...

The doctor sent us to children's that day. I knew that if we were going to Children's something was alarming. Even worse, they wanted it in an ambulance. Avery has been a champ the whole time. She's the perfect little patient. They drew blood and the hematologist came in and gave me the news I wanted and didn't want: she had blasts in her blood.. Over 60% of her blood are immature leukemia cells. Now we know what we are up against and it's time to fight.. Time to kick cancer's ass!!

7/11 - Avery was given a proactive antibiotic to help with any infections. Being leukemic means being immunodeficient, so they didn't want any chances. She had an X-ray to check her other organs and came up clear! Now it's time for a blood transfusion. She needs good blood to get her platelet and hemoglobin back up to a normal level because she will undergo a surgery tomorrow. She took the transfusion very well.. She got two units of blood and is about to get her platelets. She slept well last night and we are extremely optimistic about her disposition.

I was just told that we will have the results of what kind of Leukemia she has hopefully by the end of the day. There are two types: ALL and AML. Both are curable, but ALL has a higher success rate and is more responsive to the treatments, but treatment time is 2-3 years. AML, where also curable, is more aggressive and has a lower response to the drugs. The therapy is also very intense. We should know today!

She is handling this all so well. Better than Alex and I ever could. I have faith that she will pull through and be back to normal, but as with any cancer and chemo.... It's going to be a very long, very uphill struggle. But we have our ropes and hiking boots on and are ready to make the climb.
