Avelina's Cancer Treatment Fund

Hello everyone. My name is Nikko Sunga. I am here to share my mother's story.

Just a couple of months ago, we were on a road trip. Visiting places we have never been before. The Grand Canyon. Hoover Dam. As a family, we had an amazing time. Especially my mom. She loves being outdoors. She was able to take a million selfies, post then on Facebook and brag about the wonderful time she is having . We haven't gone on a family trip like that in quite some time. We needed that quality time together. We couldn't wait for our next family vacation.

A few weeks after returning home, we noticed something strange. My mom was beginning to lose weight at an abnormal rate and her stomach was starting to swell. We asked her how she was feeling. She gave the typical response most mother's would give, "I'm fine, don't worry about me. I'm sure everything is okay." That wasn't the case.

My mother, Avelina, has been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. We were completely blind sided by this news. As a son, I had so many thoughts running through my mind. How could this happen? Could we have prevented this? Why does she have to go through this? What can I do to help?

She was scheduled to begin treatment on September 1st. Chemotherapy. Mentally, she was trying her hardest to prepare herself. She was scared. Scared of all the side effects.
A few days before her scheduled appointment, I received a call from UCSD Medical Center informing me that my mother's insurance only covers emergency services.

Treatment has not begun due to this situation. We are currently waiting for a response from a charity care program at UCSD to see if my mom gets approved. The chances are slim, but we're hoping for the best.

In a blink of an eye, my mom went from being SuperMom (waking up early in the morning to exercise, cook us some food, clean the house after we made a mess, go for her daily walks, check up on us at work to make sure we ate) to having difficulty sitting up on the couch. Not being able to walk without her walker. Not able to eat without choking and vomiting.

My mom is a beautiful individual. Inside and out. She has been the best partner for my dad and the best mother to me. Loved by everyone that she has ever met. She has gone above and beyond to take care of all of us. Now it's our turn to return the favor.

Please help support my mother in this difficult time that she faces. Help her get back to doing what she loves to do. I don't know how much our medical expenses will be, so I don't really know how much is going to be enough. The goal above is just a number. But any amount you are able to donate is going to be a HUGE help. No amount is too small.

I would to thank you all who took the time to read and learn about my mother's situation. We are blessed for your donations, support & love.
We appreciate every single one of you
