Autumn’s Brain Surgery

Our family recently received the news that our daughter will be needing brain surgery to remove a tumor from Autumn’s brain. This is a long, drawn out process and many tests and hospital visits before, during and after her procedure.
Her first tests/hospital visit starts April 16-23rd. From there we will do more testing and possibly an invasive brain surgery which is surigically placing electrodes on the brain itself before her major surgery. Autumn is two and a half years old and has Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and Epilepsy. She has failed 6 seizure medications and surgery is the next best option to stop them. With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex this disease targets all of the major functioning organs. This means there is never a for sure diagnosis in Autumn’s future. Right now, she has tubers (TSC tumors if you will, benign) in her brain and her heart.
They can appear in your eyes, kidneys, brain, heart, gums, and in some cases lungs. They cause a lot of little white spots on your skin. Some may have them grow in the toenails or fingernails.This disease cause other diseases such as: chronic kidney disease, epilepsy, pits in your teeth, autism, cerebral palsy in some. There are also many psychiatric issues that stem from this too.
Our family lives 45 minutes from the University of Iowa. Whatever is raised will help us with food, travel, bills, care for our pets and things to keep Autumn busy during her journey. I will be unable to work most of this time because a parent needs to be there during the whole process. There is no other place I’d rather be than by her side. Matt and I are very grateful for anything even if is helping out in person. We are very thankful for this opportunity and scared at the same time. God is with us every step of the way.
