ECVHS "Save the Brave"

The iconic symbol of the El Cajon Valley Braves is the Brave symbol and mascot. The mascot was donated by the Class of 1960 and greets students and staff each day as it stands in the Quad. Over the years the condition of the Brave has deteriorated due it’s exposure to the elements of nature and is now in serious need of repair. Given its age, craftsmanship and fine detail either replacing or restoring the Brave will require substantial financial costs.
The committee has determined a path to “Save the Brave” and has elected to move forward with Bellagio Precast to perform the restoration work. Bellagio Precast is currently entrusted with restoring several works at Balboa Park in preparation for the park's centennial celebrations in 2015.
The scope of the project includes the remove all of finishes, repairing of cracks and gouges, re-crafting the Brave’s feet and the replacement of the Brave’s face with one that more closely resembles the Brave's original face. The entire Brave will be finished to a natural wood appearance, as he was originally created in 1960. Once completed the Brave will be sealed and protected from the elements with a 100 year warranty.

The project has a base cost of $15,000 which covers the restoration itself. The goal is to raise $20,000 with the additional $5,000 going toward any unforeseen costs as well as continued maintenance. We expect the restoration process itself will require thirty (30) days, with a couple weeks of contracts and preparation; with an unveiling in early September 2014.
Thanks to the very generous donations made by Coach Randy Robinson, Michael and Michelle Hayford, The Sycuan Band of The Kumeyaay Nation, and several other alumni some of which include Mrs. DeForest, Ms. Forsberg and Ms. Gebhardt $4,800 has already been raised.
Your donations toward this effort will be instrumental in returning our Alma Mater's beloved icon to its former glory. We are profoundly thankful to those of you who have already donated and hope that your generosity will inspire many more alumni to contribute to this effort.
Michael and Michelle Hayford have formed a non-profit organization, The Hayford Foundation for Education, which, among its many purposes, will serve as a collector and distributor of the funds donated for this restoration project.
