Justice for the Thyssens

Our dear friends, Andy and Jenifer Thyssen, were unjustly jailed last week on charges stemming from their care for Kostya, their mentally-ill, and unfortunately dangerous, adopted son. Over the past decade, Jen and Andy repeatedly sought help for Kostya through licensed counselors, state social service and criminal justice agencies, as well as, private sources, but have never been able to find an acceptable long-term living solution to address his needs, protect him, and others. During this time, the Thyssens have gone to great lengths to care for Kostya, provide for his treatment, and improve his quality of life. But based on tangible evidence of the danger that Kostya presented to others, the Thyssens were forced to place strict limits on Kostya’s interaction with others. During the last four years, Andy and Jen have kept Kostya (now 22 years old) in a fully furnished garage apartment next to their house. This arrangement has allowed the Thyssens to both care for Kostya and keep him under close supervision in order to prevent him from harming others.

Sadly, several weeks ago, Kostya found a way out of his apartment and was eventually arrested for burglarizing a neighbor’s house. In the course of their ensuing investigation, local authorities made the unfortunate and confusing decision to also arrest the Thyssens, believing the limits and restrictions that the Thyssens had placed on Kostya -- despite the documented danger he posed to others -- were illegal.

We are friends of Jenifer and Andy. We know that the actions taken by Jenifer and Andy were made in prayerful and sincere attempts to care for Kostya and protect others. We desire to come alongside them, support them, and help them fight to prove their innocence.

Thankfully, Andy and Jen have been released from jail and are now working to return some level of normalcy to their lives. Their release, however, required a great financial sacrifice and they undoubtedly face more financial challenges to fight the confusing charges they still face. As friends of Andy and Jen, we’d invite you to come alongside us -- both in prayer and by providing financial assistance -- to help them cover the cost of their bond ($14,000) and the future cost of fighting the legal battles necessary to ensure their freedom and vindication.
