Nikki Martin of Echo Collector Events along with her professional colleagues have created Hear and There: Audio Postcards from Earth with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and KBOO Community Radio . We are raising funds to cover a ticket fund for local kids and families facing medical challenges as well as the remaining costs for this immersive, educational production. This age and ability inclusive event will allow people from the Oregon community, particularly those facing accessibility barriers, a chance to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature in a whole new way--by sitting under night skies from all over the world while they are surrounded by the wild sounds of those locations. But we need your help to do it.
Can’t Be at the Concerts: NO WORRIES - We Got You Covered
For $25 we will send you a five minute mp3 binaural stereo mix taken from the eighteen minute surround sound program of August 29th. The recording features the other-worldly voices and sounds of bats, katydids and other tropical insects normally beyond our hearing ability.
For $40 we will send you both binaural and standard stereo mp3’s of the full eighteen minute program PLUS a digital photo of a one of our favorite weird looking but lovable katydids.
For $75 or more we will send you both binaural and standard mp3 and .WAV files of the full eighteen minute program PLUS individual .WAV files of the slowed down recordings of the featured ultrasonic katydid voices PLUS their photos AND a digital copy of the October 9 program together with a recording of the post-performance Question & Answer segment between recordists and scientists.

On August 29, 2018 we have a 21+ program as part of OMSI After Dark. Insectuality: Love Songs and Death Dances from the Panamanian Rain Forest features the ultrasonic world of bats and katydids presented in immersive surround sound slowed down so we can experience voices normally beyond our hearing ability.
On October 9, 2018 we present the full program of Hear and There: Audio Postcards from Earth. An evening of immersive soundscapes and starscapes from the forests of Madagascar, Africa, Panama and the U.S. Most of these field recordings have never been heard in public before...and never with the geo-located, time-synced night skies to match.
The numbers:
The first $500 covers the cost of tickets for 20 members of the Children's Healing Art Project community to attend. $20 covers the cost of a ticket for a child or for yourself in spirit. While we know this isn't the same as truly going out into nature, our hope is to provide inspiration and links with other community groups who may be able to help in individuals and families with accessibility barriers in attaining those goals.
If we hit $3000, we cover the inclusive travel expenses of the five field recordists who want to participate in the Q&A. They have collectively worked in sound capture, radio, television, and scientific research for decades. One records for the National Park Service and works at Colorado State University, two work as field researchers for Dartmouth College in partnership with the Smithsonian, and one is a National Geographic Explorer and creator of Wild Beats! on Nat Geo Kids. Our mastering engineer is a Grammy winner who was NPR's first sound technical director and, until recently, supervised the audio libraries at Cornell University. They volunteered their time and resources to make this happen knowing funding for them was dependent upon this campaign. We are also featuring the work of a local recordists and artists from Portland and KBOO's A Different Nature Collective. The Q and A will also feature an astronomer from OMSI so we can discuss the intersection between sound and light pollution and the impact it has on our health and on our environment as well as ways in which we can help balance these forces.
At $4500 we can cover all of the above AND the graphic design, layout, printing, and production costs of programs and other promotional materials. These are being created in collaboration with designers and printers in the Portland community utilizing recycled paper and other sustainable practices. The video was captured by Chris Baker and Myles Katherine from Portland, OR and Nikki did the sound and editing.
Anything above $4500 helps cover currently out-of-pocket production costs. This includes being able to fairly compensate for the sound mixing, mastering, and installation. As our partners are non-profits, they have covered the venue and some of the promotional costs completely from the ticket sales, but the only budget that exists to get the labor and additional materials covered is our collective social currency. Please help us by making a donation or spreading the word to those who might like to contribute to this unique, innovative event. It means the world.
Anything above $10000 goes towards a fund for the next Hear and There: Audio Postcards from Earth installment. We are hoping this will develop into a series at the planetarium.
The most urgent funds are for the kids and travel. If we cannot cover these, then local children will miss out on the opportunity to participate in a therapeutic art experience and we will likely have to severely curtail participation by the professionals in the Q&A. This would deny them and the wider community a unique educational opportunity to become more informed about the environment and those advocating for it.
Everyone at KBOO, OMSI, and within the collaboration group has shown great dedication to this project. This community we are manifesting is going above and beyond to share their love and support of the world's wild places. As far as we know, no one has ever tried this type of installation in a planetarium before.
At the end of the day we're a bunch of quiet, hardworking people who want make something for the planet and its people that will allow us all new ways to imagine ourselves in the world and hopefully cherish it and each other even more. On a personal note, this is Nikki's first artistic director debut on a production. She is so thankful to everyone who has put in months of work without ever expecting anything back other than making this a success. She promises to keep paying that goodwill forward, as ever, in her career. Thank you as always for listening and for your commitment to going with us...to where the sidewalk ends in order to see where the wild things are.
