Atlas's Medical Journey & Service Dog

Donation protected
Hello,
we are Mike and Aly and our baby's name is Atlas. At around 1 month old, we began to notice something was happening to him which resembled a seizure. His tiny body would shake and seize as his eyes would deviate or roll backwards. Not only was this occurring multiple times a day, it was also happening during his sleep. Knowing how dangerous seizures can be, especially for a developing infant's brain, we began reaching out to specialists immediately.

Our journey thus far has taken us to 3 different states to meet with specialists who ran and re-ran every diagnostic testing available. A genetic test revealed that Atlas is missing part of a gene. The gene deletion syndrome he has could be the reason for the seizures. The medical care team we have are so helpful and supportive, but the medications we have tried have not been effect in controlling the seizures. They also take away the beautiful personality of our baby boy and make him not himself.

Being seen by so many specialists, admitted to 2 different neurology departments, and doing medication trials, the medical bills are adding up. I have quit work in order to stay home to care for our baby. Mike continues to work and take on extra shifts the second they are available. Atlas is now 16 months old and continues to experiences 20 to 60 seizurea day. His medical journey will be an on going process, requiring several check-ups, medications, and more hospital visits to come.

With medication not working, we need a service dog that could act as both an alert and comfort animal to Atlas. The service dog could notify us when Atlas is having a seizure, as well as be there for him until we are able to get to him. Having a service dog to assist Atlas while walking and riding a bike as he grows would be so beneficial for safety reasons. Since we have to be seen out of state for specialty care, having a service dog next to Atlas's carseat would comfort him during a seizure until we can safely pull the car over and be there for him. The cost of a service dog is expensive. We feel that a service dog could be there for Atlas as he grows and continues to deal with his seizures and provide long term support for Atlas.

Thank you for your time and donations, and for taking this journey with us. We appreciate the support and look forward to updating you all on his condition and service dog.

Blessings and Love,
Mike & Aly
