AT Walk to End Alzheimer's 2018

The Goal:
On March 27, 2018, I will begin a thru hike attempt of the Appalachian Trail; a total distance of 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. I am dedicating this walk to my grandmother who has suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's for the past 15 years, and will be personally donating $2,200 to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA). $1 for every mile of my trek.
I am setting a challenging, but achievable goal of $8,800 ($4 for every mile of the trek) for this GoFundMe fundraiser. Including my personal donation it will total $11k going directly to AFA.
How can you support? Two ways:
1. For those who can afford it, please make a financial donation. No donation is to small and every dollar gets us closer to the goal.
2. Whether you can or cannot afford to support financially, I ask that you share this fundraiser with your social networks. The world is truly a small place and there are so many that have been personally affected or know someone who has. The more who know the more likely we can meet the goal!

My Story: 15 years ago my grandmother began to experience early signs of dementia and Alzheimer's . Over that 15 year period our family has seen her mental slips progress from getting lost in her small hometown, to no longer recognizing her children and grandchildren, to lo longer being able to function physically without constant assistance and instruction.
Along with hiring full time caretakers, many members of the family have made significant sacrifices to provide the necessary care. Our family has come to recognize dementia and Alzheimer's for the slow, sad killer that it is. The effects of Alzheimer's spread far beyond the individual, causing significant pain, sadness, and frustration amongst the family and caretakers.
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America: The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) mission is to provide optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses and to their families and caregivers.
AFA was founded in 2002 by a caregiver whose mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease from 1980-1992. At that time, there was little information available and nowhere to turn for support. His goal was to make sure that no other family living with Alzheimer’s disease would have to go the journey alone.
Since that time, AFA has grown to a network of more than 2,600 member organizations nationwide that provide direct care and services. To date, AFA has trained more than 13,000 healthcare professionals in dementia-specific care, provided free, confidential memory screenings to over 4 million people, and provides support, counseling and education to thousands.
