LAST UPDATE:

We are very sorry to inform that Austin passed away yesterday around 6pm. He would have been 1 today.

His resettlement with his family to Sweden was planned on the 3rd of December. There, he would have undergone a liver transplantation. Unfortunately, yesterday, his health condition had deteriorated extremely. He passed away surrounded by his all family.

He fought with strength all along the year he lived.

Our prayers and thoughts go to the family who was so brave during this long and exhausting hardship.

Tenaganita and Austin's family would like to thank all individuals and organizations who had supported Austin and his family here in Kuala Lumpur such as:
- Yayasan Chow Kit
- Whispering Hope Methodist Church
- Tanarata International School
- Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church
- Malaysia Karen Organization especially S'Billion and family
- Karen Welfare Association
- Malaysia Karen Musicians group
- Coup de Pouce
- Saw Baw Tho
- Julie Das
- Karine Bizard
- All individuals who gave money through the fundraising campaign

Finally, we are grateful and would like to thank the Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) and the doctors who took care of Austin and fought to keep him alive and in good health condition such as:
- The liver team: Dr. NG who was in charge, Dr. Chew, Dr. Choong, Dr. Nadia, Dr. Paran, Dr. Hamsa
- The ICU team: Prof. Gan, Dr. Justin, Dr. Chuah, Prof. Lucy, Dr. Claudia, Dr. Liew, Dr. Fatihah, Dr. Amanda

Austin touched a lot of different people.

May he rest in peace.

For those who might be interested, we will keep the campaign open until the family resettlement to Sweden, that should come soon. The parents will have to  support life costs such as food, rent, warm clothes etc. If you want to support their move in Sweden, you can donate in here. The funds will all be reverse to the family as soon as they reach the country and open a bank account there.

Thank you.

SEPTEMBER UPDATE :

Today, Austin is 10 months old.

Austin and his family now have the refugee status. They will be relocated in Sweden after mid-november.

Due to his serious health condition, Austin will not be able to live until then.

However, there is HOPE.

Last August, the PPUM (University Malaya Medical Centre of Kuala Lumpur) launched a new transplant program.

This means that the team of the doctors in Kuala Lumpur, with help of a Chinese doctor, agreed to perform the surgery on the 25th October.

It's very costly and we need to fund raise RM300,000 for this surgery to happen and also for the care after the surgery. Austin will have to stay in hospital several months after the surgery to avoid any infection that can be fatal.

We need you to keep him alive and allow him go to Sweden with his parents, his brother and his sister.

Please email us at [email redacted] for further details or contact Audrey at +(60)169587782 or Julie DAS at +(60)169272705.

Naw Ruth is a registered asylum seeker in Malaysia. Her 5-month old son, Austin needs urgent liver's transplant.

Both of them are registered with UNHCR. They fled from Myanmar around 2008. Both of them were escaping their village which was a war zone. They fear that the soldiers would take them against their free will and become forced labourers. Naw Ruth herself was forced to become a nurse for the military.

They first fled to Thailand and stayed there for two years. However, being undocumented, they feared getting caught by the police so they fled to Malaysia. Both of them created a beautiful family with 3 children. The oldest is a 7-year-old daughter, followed by a 3-year-old son, and lastly Austin, who is 5 months old.

Austin started his life with a Biliary Atresia. He also has prolonged jaundice and pale stool. Austin needed at this time to undergo an operation to remove this blocked/narrow duct

The operation was very costly. Naw Ruth needed at least RM35,000 to cover all medical fees.
It took time for her to get the RM35,000 for the surgery and once we got it, the doctors didn't want to take risks to operate him.

The situation now is that Austin needs a liver's transplant within 4 to 6 weeks to avoid really serious damage or death. This surgery is also very expensive and it has to be done in India or Singapour, as in Malaysia or Australia, they don't do the liver transplant with living donors.

The amount of money we ask is including the surgery in Kuala Lumpur and the 2 months post-transplant period needed to recover.

We urge any donation amount to help Naw Ruth’s young baby and help ease the pain they have to endure.

If you would like to personally donate or meet the mother and baby, Tenaganita could facilitate the meeting with them.
