Asylum for Mugisa

Mugisa* is a victim of torture and harassment by the government of Uganda and is seeking asylum in the US.  A successful businessman in Uganda, he was targeted for harassment and intimidation because he financially supported the opposition party.  He fled the country in 2018 after surviving two kidnapping attempts, one poisoning attempt (in which his employee was badly poisoned instead), and being beaten unconscious in prison.  Upon waking up after several days in the hospital, he managed to escape and make his way to the US.  Mugisa was forced to leave his wife and 5 children as well as many extended family members in Uganda.  His children have been split up and are living with different family members for their protection.  His wife has had a stroke and suffers from high blood pressure.  Mugisa's dream is to obtain asylum status and then reunite his family here.

Mugisa has been living in the Boston area since 2018. He has permission to work while his asylum case winds its way through the process.  He tried to find a pro-bono attorney, but none were able to take his case given the overwhelming number of emergency situations they are dealing with now. With the help of friends, he has found a well-respected immigration lawyer to help him make his case for asylum.  It will cost at least $4000 to hire the attorney.  Mugisa has managed to save $1500 and his friends have raised $1000. Mugisa's first hearing with the immigration judge is in early July 2020.

Mugisa is an extremely hard working and honest Muslim man who is living in limbo with very little support system here.  He is receiving support from a Jewish faith community in Greater Boston that is organizing this appeal.  He misses his family terribly but he has been unable to tell them or help them much for fear of endangering their safety and his own.  We would be extremely grateful for any help!
