My mother Assunta, or "Sunta", "Sunts" to family and friends, is currently battling the hardest battle she could face - COVID 19 and it's complications.

Our fight began more than a month ago, around July 14, when she started to develop a slight cough and weakness, which eventually progressed to a fever. She also had more obvious symptoms pointing to a urinary tract infection, which we treated immediately, but when we did a precautionary swab, it unfortunately turned out to be positive. What followed was one of the most stressful days of our lives - coordinating an improbable transfer to a more well equipped hospital, to the next days of gradual decrease in lung function, to multiple attempts of decreasing the oxygen support but not succeeding. We had good days and bad days. Throughout this time I was with her 24/7 and gave her all the support that she needed in full PPE. We were optimistic of her chances of defeating COVID 19.

However, it has now been 5 weeks since mama was admitted in the hospital. She has mostly weathered the storm of COVID 19 and is supposed to be in the process of the uphill climb to recovery. Unfortunately, during this process, her immune system went down, and opportunistic organisms set in causing a devastating pneumonia on top of a very damaged lung from COVID.

This is her battle now. On her 4th week in the hospital, she was having so much trouble with her breathing that a breathing tube was put in her and she had to be transferred to the ICU. She is currently dependent on a mechanical ventilator to help her breathe while her lungs try to heal and eradicate the infection.

Through our investments and savings, as well as the generosity of mama's friends and family, we were able to get by these past 5 weeks. However, while mama is still in the intensive care unit and on that ventilator, the hospital bill will just keep on growing, and it still might take a long time for her to recover.

With the grace of the Divine Physician our Lord, He has sustained and kept mama here with us these past few days and weeks. We pray that she recover fully so that she can be a testament of His love and mercy. With your help, we will be able to reach this goal. With your help, we may be able achieve a miracle.
