What started as an ongoing cigarette smoke smell in our apartment a few months ago turned into a much larger problem! After many phone calls with the city of Lynchburg health department and getting a professional inspector to review our HVAC system, we discovered that the HVAC system has been neglected for so long that the liner has deteriorated and would need to be replaced or encapsulated. It has also become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and cigarette/carcinogenic residue.

The inspector highly recommended air quality testing because he believed this was a health hazard, but that testing also comes at a cost! Unfortunately, this ongoing issue has caused a health problem so severe that it was a contributor to Audrey’s recent hospital visit in August. We wanted to get the system cleaned, but unfortunately, the inspector told us that it is too far gone, and would be destroyed in the process. The owner of this property, Stewart Langley has refused to fix this for months. We asked them again and shared the information from the inspector, but the landlord says that the HVAC system has never been cleaned, and they don’t intend to do so, unless it causes damages as severe as cracking the drywall from not functioning properly! The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning your air ducts every 3-5 years, and since this place was built around the 1960’s, that's about 60 years of neglect!

To remedy this situation & fix our home we need:

Duct cleaning $625

Vital oxide (disinfectant and deodorizer) $250

Encapsulation (because liner has deteriorated) $600

Additionally, we hope to get air quality testing to help our case with the city so that hopefully this can be proven as a violation!
