My name is Zack, and I'm a mentally ill, autistic, disabled 23 year old from the UK.
I'm raising money to go towards getting, and training, an assistance dog. The dog will be able to help me live independently in a successful way, get back on track with university (which I am attending, but frequently miss days and work), be able to leave the house regularly and confidently, and hopefully ease a lot of symptoms.
As well as being autistic, I have fibromyalgia (which affects mobility, and my ability to bend down and pick up fallen items), and multiple mental health issues (including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more).
This was something that I previously was working towards but unfortunately I was in an abusive home situation, and for my own safety I had to prioritise escaping that, now leaving me with worse symptoms than ever. As well as being specially trained to be polite and safe in public areas like shops, my dog will be taught special tasks to assist me (some of these include grounding to help with autistic meltdowns and flashbacks, picking things up for me when I can't, giving alerts to rising anxiety levels, creating a physical barrier between myself and crowded places, as well as many other things).
This money will directly cover the most important expenses, namely:
- Sourcing and rehoming a dog (I intend to rescue a shelter dog, but this involves a lot of searching for the right dog)
- General training (1-2-1 sessions and group classes, as well as travelling to and from them)
- Task training (the specialist training that will make my dog so helpful to me, and that I don't have the skills to do alone)
- Public Access training (£1000 of which goes to specific training and assessment by an ADUK candidate charity, as well as travel and stay in the area)
I'm a full time student, and unable to work. I know the end goal is very high, but this could literally be the thing that saves my life, and it's very difficult for me to pay for alone.
Thanks for your time,
