Assistance Fund for Angel in Need

Our beloved friend, Peri, requires our help. She has lived in her rent-stabilized, studio apartment on East 16th Street in Manhattan for over 30 years. The building was previously owned by the famous landlord, Sol Goldman, and is now owned by his billionaire children. Their management company, Solil Management, can be found on Yelp and other peer to peer rating websites. Please look them up.  They are one of the largest landlords in New York; yet they are also notorious in terms of what their tenants say about their lack of concern for the safety and well being of the tenants.

Starting a year ago, Peri was having inexplicable symptoms of illness —bloodshot & burning eyes, skin rashes that wouldn’t heal, chronic fatigue, joint inflammation, sleep deprivation, colds & flus that lasted weeks and months on end, throat & ear issues, digestive issues. She spent countless days exhausted and sick in bed. At the urging of her astute physician, Peri was finally prescribed specific lab tests to evaluate the cause of her illnesses. The results were horrific. Her exposure to mold in the last year sent her numbers off the chart —healthy levels are below 2831. In November 2017, Peri’s result was 13,651. Her results are 400% greater than levels considered safe for the body.

A subsequent professional mold test was performed in her apartment which revealed high levels of mold in the air and mold growth in her walls, ceiling, bathroom, as well as other areas of the apartment. The HPD has also inspected, confirmed and recorded recent violations for mold in the apartment. They found 9 violations in Peri’s apartment alone. There are 51 building-wide HPD violations, 21 of which are “Class A violations”.

Peri has ongoing medical expenses and has been advised by her doctor that there is clear evidence of auto-immune disease and immune deficiency based on her exposure to toxic mold, and that she needs to vacate the apartment immediately. Peri has been staying with friends as much as possible, but needs to find a sublet or share asap. She has not been able to work because of her medical condition. Her doctor is imploring her to move and not reside in the building anymore because the building itself is full of mold and Peri’s health cannot recover in that environment.

The landlord, 145 East 16th Street LLC,  has been advised of the above, but has thus far refused any kind of compensation, both financial or remedial, not to mention help for her accruing medical expenses. They have refused to offer her any compensation to surrender her rent-stabilized lease, and they have done nothing to even address the mold in the apartment. Her only hope is to hire a lawyer and engage in a legal battle. Unfortunately, she does not have funds for legal representation and yet the situation is dire.

Peri needs our immediate help. Peri is an artist, a fashion maven and FIT teacher and counselor; designer, stylist, fundraiser, event planner, hostess, volunteer worker. She has always been a selfless angel to so many of us. Now we ask to help us return the love. She requires money to help her move, pay for ongoing medical bills and expenses, and hire an attorney to sue her landlord for negligence and constructive eviction.

Please find it in your heart to donate, any amount, big or small, it will go a long way to aiding Peri through this crisis.

Donations through this site are generally not tax deductible, but if there is a major donor (more than $5,000) who wants to donate and receive a tax deduction, please contact us and we can make arrangements to try to help facilitate.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

Notes on "Help Our Peri" Team:

We are some of Peri's closest friends here in New York City who have been helping her through this time by working with her legal team, documenting her apartment troubles, and providing her support as she moves from place to place until all this is sorted. The funds are collected by Ryan Adams, who has been running this campaign and was nice enough to put the initial money so Peri did not have to wait for GoFundMe to disperse them. It is then distributed directly to Peri via QuickPay or used to pay for services for her during this tough time. The money is being used to move her into a new place, pay for legal fees, and replace many of the damaged items, as well as cover any fees while she is transitioning to a new permanent residence.
