Assist Amanda

Amanda is my younger sister.  She lives in Vietnam with her family and works as a Teacher at an international school.  Of course her home is still Australia where we her extended family live and she regularly makes it home.  We are a family separated by distance with siblings living in Qld, ACT and Victoria.  This can always be difficult yet with modern technology we remain close and support each other and cherish the times we all get together.

After a difficult year for our family having watched our father go through Pancreatic Cancer and my older sister struggle with health problems and survive major surgery from a Brain Aneurysm  we certainly appreciate the small things in life and the precious times with family, friends, work colleagues and even new people that come into your life.

Amanda has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) which is a cancer.   A prognosis is an estimate of the likely course of the disease and the chance of it being cured or controlled.   How quickly it came on!  Being in Vietnam and needing urgent medical care she was Medivaced  to Singapore Hospital to undergo her initial chemotherapy.  How overwhelming to be so ill and so far away from home, family and support we all require and crave when so unwell.

Of course the good side on this treatment is Amanda had medical insurance so is being taken care of with fantastic care in Singapore.  However, insurance only covers accommodation costs to a certain amount.  Whilst her family still have to work to support themselves they are flying back and forth so Amanda has someone with her to be there to help support the long process.

We expect Amanda to be in Singapore now for an extended period of time.  Of course this is all depended on her progress.   She will be unable to return to either Vietnam or Australia whilst undergoing this treatment.

How hard it is to be so far away from a family member who is fighting to live!  We her family are grateful that her husband Ben and son Nicholas can be there for her.  We also acknowledge it's difficulties for them and the toll for them all.

How can I help?  We all ask and we support loved ones.  Well my children have commenced on a venture of their own to help Auntie Amanda and Uncle Ben.  Queensland has now introduced recycling and they have set the challenge to collect 5000 cans/bottles to raise $500 to go towards an airfare or accommodation or food for Amanda's continued support and well being.  We are off to a good start having already collected 800 items raising $80. FANTASTIC!  We invite our friends to save and donate their recyclables to the girls to reach their target.

I know personally we all go through hard times and cost of living can be expensive and hard and we don't always have expendable money.  Especially coming to the Christmas season.  However,  if you can help in the smallest way to contribute to ASSISTING AMANDA - how grateful we would be.

For me personally this is the least I can do to help. I support my sister from a distance.  She knows I'd be there next to her bed if I could.  I'm a Skype chat away for her mental health and a shoulder to cry on or a simple chat about the weather.  The last thing any ill person needs is the stress of money.  I would like to at least ease this worry a little.
