Askew Family Medical Costs

Avari was born at home with midwives on February 22. She was absolutely adorable at 6lbs 11oz and seemed to be in perfect health until 4 weeks old when she developed a cough and fever. Her doctor did a CBC and her hemoglobin was 7.8 (Normal Hgb is 10.5-14). She was in the NICU at Phoenix Children's Hospital the very next day for a blood transfusion. She was diagnosed by 7 wks with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder in which the bone marrow doesn't produce RBCs. She has her blood drawn in Flagstaff until her RBCs are too low, then is taken to Phoenix for a blood transfusion. She survives on blood transfusions every 3-5 weeks.  As of this writing she is 4 years old and has had 38 transfusions. There are medical and travel costs invovled that continue to increase.

In spite of the emotional and financial strain that this has placed on her young family, they try to remain positive and live life to the fullest, as they are able.

To compound an already bad situation, this past week  Avari's young daddy, Todd,  was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive and malignant form of melanoma at the age of 31. In addition to Avari, he is also a wonderful daddy to 7 year old Ari and 2 year old Ben. Not to mention that he is the primary breadwinner for his young family.  As this diagnosis was only just received, the details for treatment and prognosis are still being determined.

The future for this family is even more unknown and their financial sitution more uncertain. There will be more tests, travel and treatments that they will need assistance with, in addition to everyday financial responsiblities. Gofundme requires a goal amount to be added in setup, but there is no way to know the expenses that will be involved.
