Askay Thomas Fire Relief

My dad, Greg Askay, lost his house and almost everything he owned in the Thomas Fire in Ventura this past week. It was the house my brother and I grew up in. It’s so surreal having just visited him while passing through town last Monday night, just a few hours before the fires came. His house in Clearpoint was among the first destroyed by the fire in the early morning, so he evacuated early with just couple changes of clothes, his two dogs and some important paperwork. Then he went to go help my 96 y.o. grandma evacuate her house further down Foothill Road.


It’s been an unbelievable week for everyone in Ventura, especially all the folks living in and by the burn areas. I’m heartbroken for my hometown and grateful for the efforts of the first reponders and firefighters. Admist all of this, I’m trying to find ways to help my dad rebuild his life. He is optimistic and resilient, but rebounding from this kind of loss is challenging and takes time. He’s already been overwhelmed with caring for my grandma (thankfully her house was just partially damaged), especially as my grandpa passed away earlier this year. So I’m setting this up in hopes of helping jump start his rebuilding process.


My dad is a selfless individual who served the citizens of Ventura Country through 38 years in law enforcement. He worked as a police officer in Ventura and later became an investigator for the District Attorney’s office, where he investigated financial scams and crimes. In his retirement, he and my uncle have been consumed these past few years caring for my grandparents, so that they could continue living in their own home instead of going into assisted living. So I’m trying to help him out now so he can get his own life and home back together.
